On Wednesday January 20th I attended the 6A Valley Vista Monsoon vs the 6A Chandler Wolves at St. Mary’s.

Here were some of the varsity standouts of the game:

Chandler 63 Valley Vista 62 (unofficial stats)

Valley Vista

[player_tooltip player_id="814521" first="Aadem" last="Isai"] Valley Vista (23 pts 2 ast 2 stls)

-A true combo-guard plays with a high IQ and is extremely skilled. He uses ball fakes, pick and rolls, hesitations, changes speeds and a super fast release to get his shot off. He knows how to read a defense and he gets to the FT line in bunches. He is very crafty around the rim and uses a tighter handle to get passed his defenders. His IQ and skill jump out at you when you watch him.

[player_tooltip player_id="809723" first="Dwight" last="McKnight"] Valley Vista (9 pts 3 asts 1 stl)

-A fast lead guard has good open court speed. He makes plays for others and is very quick on the ball defensively. I was impressed with how much better his shooting looks from a year ago. His pull-up is polished and although he didn’t hit a 3, it looks cleaner. Him and Isai will be critical to this teams success moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id="1121053" first="Dwayne" last="Porter"] Valley Vista (8 pts 2 rebs 1 blk)

-A long athletic wing has nice upside. He flies in the open court and has great length and pop to rebound or block shots. He is mostly an attacker of the rim at this point. His ability to get out in the open court and his defense should help them moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id="703839" first="Elijah" last="Thomas"] Valley Vista (5 pts 4 rebs 1 ast 2 stls 2 blks)

-A long and lean defender who can shoot it. He had a jaw dropping come-from-behind block at the rim plus collected steals. He hit a catch-3 but for the most part he was very quiet in this game. He needs to get his energy up in these bigger games but a high upside player.

[player_tooltip player_id="809708" first="Demari" last="Hackett"] Valley Vista (8 pts 6 rebs 1 ast 1 blk)

-A powerful forward is tough to keep off the glass. He has good energy and a motor. He can hit from mid-range and will shoot the 3 occasionally. He can block shots and uses his rugged build to carve up space and score it through traffic.

Chandler

[player_tooltip player_id="809683" first="Nicholas" last="Riley"] Chandler (15 pts 10 rebs 4 blks)

-The big man got on the glass with his huge mitts, strength and length. He has a polished hook shot and uses his strength and girth to get position to rebound. It is very hard to guard him with just one person. Teams may have to send a player to double him or he will score it or get fouled. He is also becoming an enforcer by blocking shots.

[player_tooltip player_id="809699" first="Carson" last="Kelly"] Chandler (Pictured) (25 pts 3 asts)

-A jet quick PG with a yo-yo handle. He has speed on speed with the ball in his hands. His pull-up is pure and made three 3’s off the catch showing he is adding range to his game. He uses his shifty handle to get into the lane and has the floater game. He sees the court well and is a tough cover in the open court. He makes some of the more difficult shots in traffic you will see from an undersized guard.

[player_tooltip player_id="996171" first="Ezias" last="Steffen"] Chandler (7 pts 2 rebs 1 ast 1 blk)

-A skilled wing forward allowed their star players to get some space with his shooting. He can drive the lane and rebound in his area. He is a nice piece to the puzzle this season but will be their star in the program for years to come.

[player_tooltip player_id="959021" first="Elijah" last="Johnson"] Chandler (9 pts 4 rebs 2 asts)

-A studied frame forward will be very important to their teams success. He will be needed to relieve some of the stress off of Kelly and Riley this season. He can drive it through contact and score plus initiate some offense as well. He uses his strong frame/build to rebound and he can score it through contact.
