10 players who could potentially lead their teams to upsets in Thursday’s sectional semifinals...

[player_tooltip player_id="1095818" first="Tre" last="Burris"] - 2021 - G - Martin Luther

Burris battled foul trouble in the first meeting against Wisconsin Lutheran and really didn’t get to sink his teeth into that matchup. The senior guard is coming off a 23-point performance in an upset win over Whitnall in the regional finals. An explosive and aggressive scorer, when Burris gets going, Martin Luther has won and hung around in some high level games, including Lake Country Lutheran, The Prairie School, Racine St. Catherine’s, and Janesville Parker -- who are all still playing. When Burris scores at least 15 points, the Spartans are 8-2 this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="935489" first="Mason" last="Dorn"] - 2021 - SG - Seymour

The Thunder are facing a red hot Ashwaubenon team that’s won 16-straight games. Seymour may not have the same depth and talent, but they do have the best pure scorer in senior guard [player_tooltip player_id="935489" first="Mason" last="Dorn"]. A top 50 prospect in the 2021 class, Dorn is putting up 28.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Dorn is shooting 56 percent from the field and has 11 30-point efforts, which includes two 40-point games and a 50-point game. The Thunder are 10-1 when Dorn scores 30 points or more and that includes victories against Bay Port and West De Pere.

[player_tooltip player_id="880040" first="Nik" last="Feller"] - 2021 - SG - Poynette

Feller is a creative scorer with a lot of skills on the ball. He’s putting up 19 points per game as a senior and has explosive offensive ability, which he’ll need to tap into if Poynette is going to upset Lake Country Lutheran. Feller does appear to be peaking at the right time, scoring 21 or more points in six-straight games, including 29 against a very good Lake Mills team.

[player_tooltip player_id="880022" first="Chad" last="Kron"] - 2021 - G - Eau Claire North

River Falls has won both previous meetings against Eau Claire North by double digits. They’ll have to beat the Huskies three times in order to move onto the sectional finals. In those two previous wins, the Wildcats held down Kron, a 20-point per game scorer, to a combined 12-of-39 shooting, resulting in two double-digit victories. Should Kron find his groove on Thursday, it could result in a potential upset.

[player_tooltip player_id="879994" first="Carter" last="Lancaster"] - 2021 - SF - Darlington

The Redbirds get SJNMA in Thursday’s sectional semifinals. Facing a high-octane offense that likes to run n’ gun, Lancaster’s more methodical, grind-it-out style could be problematic. The 6-foot-3 senior is a swiss army knife that leads Darlington in scoring (19.0 ppg), rebounding (8.1 ppg), and assists (3.9 ppg). A physical, blue collar defensive presence, Lancaster will presumably get the call on SJNMA’s stud shooting guard [player_tooltip player_id="804898" first="Brandin" last="Podziemski"] as well.

[player_tooltip player_id="764114" first="Adam" last="Larson"] - 2021 - F - Fennimore

Fennimore will be underdogs at The Prairie School, but the Hawks don’t seem to have a great matchup for Larson on paper. The Southeast Missouri State commit is a long, 6-foot-9 forward who can step away from the rim and shoot the basketball. Larson is averaging 24.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season. If he gets going offensively and protect the rim defensively, The Prairie School may be in for a big fight on Thursday.

[player_tooltip player_id="764118" first="John" last="Lovelace"] - 2021 - SF - Brown Deer

Brown Deer has a very tough matchup against Pewaukee, arguably the favorites in Division 2. Just gaining eligibility, Lovelace dropped 20 points in a regional final win over top-seed Grafton in his senior season debut. A top 20 prospect in the class of 2021, Lovelace is an athletic, slashing wing who can also shoot the ball well from the outside. He gives the Falcons five bonafide scorers and one of the deepest starting lineups in the state.

[player_tooltip player_id="801136" first="Maximus" last="Nelson"] - 2022 - F - Appleton North

De Pere doesn’t have a lot of size. In fact, the Cardinals don’t have a player in their regular rotation taller than 6-foot-4. That said, they’re going to have to come up with something to slow down Nelson. The sweet-shooting forward is averaging 21.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season. If/when De Pere presumably sends extra defenders, Nelson can turn to [player_tooltip player_id="1029760" first="Brock" last="Donaldson"], who had 24 points on 5-of-5 shooting from 3-point range against Hortonville, to make them pay from the outside.

[player_tooltip player_id="880025" first="Aidan" last="Ottery"] - 2021 - SF - Saint Mary’s Springs

Racine St. Catherine’s is a big favorite on Thursday, but may struggle to contain Ottery. Presumably, UW-Green Bay commit [player_tooltip player_id="879981" first="Kamari" last="McGee"], who’s one of the best defenders in the state, draws that assignment, but he’s giving up a lot of size. Ottery is a skilled point forward that’s averaging 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game. He does present some potential matchup problems for the Division 3 favorites, who play a guard-heavy lineup.

[player_tooltip player_id="1115917" first="Drew" last="Wagner"] - 2024 - G - Kettle Moraine

Kettle Moraine is going to face Arrowhead on Thursday. The Warhawks likely have to match up with the Lasers’ 1-2 punch in the frontcourt with their duo of [player_tooltip player_id="804923" first="Sam" last="Hytinen"] and [player_tooltip player_id="953945" first="Mac" last="Wrecke"]. That could leave Wagner, a dangerous sniper, as the x-factor who gets some favorable matchup. Putting together a very promising freshman campaign, Wagner is averaging 11.2 points per game.
