Since their three score loss to Hopkins, the Wayzata Trojans have knocked off a pair of Lake Conference teams including last night’s win over Edina.

Gabe Jobe, a 5-foot-10 junior guard from Edina, is off to a nice start this season scoring in all three Hornet wins this year including 24 points against STMA. Jobe kicked off the game with Wayzata hitting two threes a couple steps behind the arc. Trojan defenders moved to defensive position but Jobe’s attempts were so deep they were tough to contest. Jobe’s third score was a transition lay-up as the Hornets executed the fast break to perfection. Jobe started out at the arc but then went to the rim scoring several times on the left side. He had 20 points for the game.

Each of Jobe’s first three scores included a pass from Sammy Presthus, a 6-foot-2 junior point guard from Edina. Presthus used snap reversals, a quick outlet, and one dribble attack kicks to open up attempts for Jobe. Sammy’s best first half pass was likely the 60 feet outlet that whizzed from sideline to sideline hitting [player_tooltip player_id="774926" first="Marcus" last="Crawford"], a 6-foot-3 senior guard committed to Macalester, perfectly in stride. If not that one the halfcourt attack where Presthus went through three defenders to lead a big for a score was likely your favorite. Presthus had at least five first half assists and these first half creations have me thinking Sammy is one of 2022’s best passers. Jobe and Presthus are a strong junior backcourt that gave Edina a lot of early hope.

[player_tooltip player_id="850703" first="Camden" last="Heide"], a 6-foot-6 junior nationally ranked wing from Wayzata, opened his scoring account with two buckets at the rim. The most impressive of which was Heide going behind the back with the dribble into an attack finish. The most impressive play - and if you want to see it look at the 2:30 mark of the Max Wagner video linked below - was Heide jumping to intercept a pass with two hands and then attacking the rim with a spin move for a two hand dunk. The interception into a spin move dunk will stay with me but so will the jab-step right, attack left into a jumpstop 8-footer while falling back a tad. It was an early impossible play to guard and the quickness left after the jab right was a key piece. Try and guard Heide with a guard? He backed down his man and scored with a soft touching jump hook using the right. Later the Trojans posted Heide again only this time he turned over the other shoulder, and hit the one hander with his left. Three point touch? I’d guess Heide is about a 38 percent three point shooter for his career. Knocked out two big threes last night to help Wayzata go from up 3-4 scores, to being up 15 points. Good looking shot that gets out of his hands quickly. Heide finished with 21 points.

Need speed? For Wayzata it’s open supplied by [player_tooltip player_id="774744" first="Eddie" last="Beeninga"], a 6-foot-1 senior guard signed with Minnesota State-Moorhead. Beeninga back cut Jobe for a score, he pump faked his man into a bad spot followed by an attack, and he sped to the rim off a reversal while the Edina defense failed to recover. Eddie is the type of player that can take advantage of even the smallest of lanes and Edina gave him a lot of space early. Eddie continued to use the pump fake to perfection late in the half when he lifted a defender into the air on his closeout and then shovel passing to [player_tooltip player_id="532609" first="Kody" last="Williams"] for a lay-up. Eddie’s hesitation ranks with the best. If he gets you to relax even for a moment his lighting quick first step will get you. And remember how we’ve talked about how in clutch situations Eddie is always involved? Last night a huge play was Eddie poking the ball from Presthus and then Rodman diving after the ball to get possession. Eddie scored a team high 23.

Colleges know that [player_tooltip player_id="850713" first="Carter" last="Bjerke"], a 6-foot-8 junior power forward from Wayzata, has an incredible three point touch but what else can he offer? I would say low post game. After hitting a three early, Bjerke went into the paint and used his strong frame to turn on balance over each shoulder and hit short baby hook attempts. Bjerke made two threes as well an attacking using a Hakeem ball fake to move his man before scoring the short jumper. Bjerke finished putting 20 points in the book.

[player_tooltip player_id="850735" first="Brady" last="Helgren"], a 6-foot-8 junior power forward from Edina, did a lot of his work in workmanlike fashion. An offensive rebound score here, a couple cuts to the rim to score behind the rotation defense, and then a post-up make. One of his more memorable buckets was an offensive rebound followed by a hard right pivot getting leverage inside Bjerke to score on balance from the left side. Excellent power pivot into the score. Brady had another putback score timing his jump and tipping it with one hand straight over the top of Bjerke for a third time. Brady matched the 20 points that Bjerke had.

Keep an eye on Wayzata sophomores Hayden Tibbits, a 5-foot-10 point guard, and Spencer Hall, a 6-foot-2 wing. In the pair of Trojan games we’ve seen this year both have made a solid impression.

Top Prospects in the Game

[player_tooltip player_id="850703" first="Camden" last="Heide"]

[player_tooltip player_id="850713" first="Carter" last="Bjerke"]

[player_tooltip player_id="850735" first="Brady" last="Helgren"]

Sammy Presthus

[player_tooltip player_id="774744" first="Eddie" last="Beeninga"]

[player_tooltip player_id="532609" first="Kody" last="Williams"]

Gabe Jobe

[player_tooltip player_id="796955" first="Ryan" last="Harvey"]

Hayden Thibbits

[player_tooltip player_id="774926" first="Marcus" last="Crawford"]
