The 2019-2020 Monsignor Martin League (Buffalo NY) was highly competitive and produced many memorable moments for both teams and individuals alike. This series will focus on the individual members of the 2020-2021 Nichols Vikings.
Steven Hall – Power Forward – Class of 2021
Steven Hall is a 6’3” Senior who is a full-time Power Forward. Hall appeared in 22 games in 2019-2020, posting averages of 2.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and a half of a block per contest. Hall, similarly to other Nichols frontcourt players, saw his playing time increase substantially last season after a January 2020 injury to the accomplished Aidan Horan.
In my opinion, the strongest part of Hall’s game is his ability to convert on the majority of his field goal attempts. Sinking 46% of all of his tries in 2019-2020, Hall impressed me with his ability to make the most of his opportunities. His best stretch came over three games in late January 2020; in contests against Bishop Timon-St. Jude, Hutchinson-Central Tech, and Cardinal O’Hara, he managed to make 60%, 80%, and 80% of the shots he attempted!
One area where Hall can certainly improve is with his free throw shooting. Not only did he not get to the line as much as Coach Joe Mihalics would have liked, but he was also underwhelming when he did. On just 18 attempts all season long, Hall sunk 40% of the shots. His lone bright spot from the line came in a January 2020 loss to Middle Early College, where he made both of his attempts in the game.
I appreciate Hall’s game because he is a throwback, back-to-the-basket type player. He is most comfortable operating with both feet in the three-second area. As a sturdy player, I like his ability to use his size and weight to his advantage when he boxes out to rebound. All in all, I see Hall as an all-encompassing “glue guy” that Nichols should lean heavily on in 2020-2021.
