Here are the quick hits from Thursday night’s action.
The Mustangs have shooters all over the floor.
First-year head coach Mike Miller has the luxury of drawing up different plays for a team that has shooters all over the floor. Thursday night, Houston made 14 3s in the win and a lot of them were uncontested. The Mustangs were able to get the shots they wanted.
Houston jumped out to a 9-0 lead, thanks to senior guard Cal Green’s back-to-back 3s that was followed by a Zander Yates Zander Yates 6'8" | SF Houston | 2021 State TN ’ 3-pointer. The Panthers got within 16-11 before sophomore guard Maverick Miller made a 3 to push the Mustangs’ lead to 27-13.
Once Houston grabbed a double-digit lead, it didn’t look back.
“It’s a lot of stuff we have been working on. We executed and made shots tonight,” coach Miller said. “That makes it a lot easier for us to make shots. We haven’t been shooting the ball really well, but we have a really good shooting team, so we have to continue to work on it and get better.”
Senior wing Mason Miller and senior point guard TJ Madlock each had 13 points to lead the Mustangs. Green had 12. Freshman guard Ahmad Nowell added 11 off the bench. Yates provided nine and Miller added eight.
Bartlett was limited offensively.
Junior guard Amarr Knox picked up two fouls in the first quarter and was never able to catch a rhythm throughout the night. Houston sent double teams his way throughout the game to ensure he wouldn’t get great looks at the basket. Knox was a non-factor in this matchup, and there was no one else the Mustangs were concerned about. Knox finished with 10 points on a night the Panthers needed him to have a monster offensive outing.
The Panthers missed senior guard Kam Jones.
Jones sat out Thursday’s game because of an injury. Bartlett definitely missed his 3-point shooting. With Knox seeing double teams, there was no else capable of being a 3-point threat. For most of the night, the Panthers struggled to score, mainly because of Houston’s size and length. Bartlett couldn’t get easy scores at the rim and had to settle for a lot of outside shots.
