The 2019-2020 Monsignor Martin League (Buffalo NY) was highly competitive and produced many memorable moments for both teams and individuals alike. This article will preview the 2020-2021 St. Mary’s Lancers.
2019-2020 St. Mary’s Lancers – Overall Record 8-16, Conference Record 1-11
In 2020-2021, there is nowhere for the Lancers to go but up. After finishing last in the Monsignor Martin League in 2019-2020, the Lancers will need the bulk of their roster to step up and produce more than they did a season ago. St. Mary’s struggled both at home and on the road, though they did finish their “neutral site” schedule at 5-2 last year.
The fact that St. Mary’s has lost two of their three leading scorers to graduation simply means that a new player, or a combination of new players, must improve enough to fill that void. Most likely to be the new leading scorer is now Senior Brandon Thome. Thome, who managed 9.0 points per game as a Junior, splits time at both Guard positions. Some of his 2019-2020 scoring outbursts included an 18 point effort against Cleveland Hill and a 17 point game against Williamsville North. He also managed to pour in 16 in the Lancers’ lone conference win on January 30, 2020, at Nichols.
Another player who is poised to have a tremendous season is Senior Trenton Rumley. Standing at all of 5’7”, Rumley used his small stature to cement himself as a defensive menace in 2019-2020. He leads all returning Lancers, coming off of a 1.1 steals per game campaign. In his final season, look for Rumley to continue his defensive wizardry while attempting to improve his scoring and assist numbers.
