Two of the top teams in division IV battled in Berlin, Ohio for the season opener for each team. It was Toledo Christian who took home the victory due to their successful full-court pressure and winning the rebounding battle. Here are the top performers from the game.

[player_tooltip player_id="714553" first="Trevor" last="Wensink"], 6’2 SG Toledo Christian 2021: Wensink really shined after [player_tooltip player_id="805223" first="Cole" last="McWhinnie"] left with an injury. Proved capable of running the offense through him. Too physically mature for the defense, overpowered the weaker Hiland defense. Shot the ball with a lot of success from the outside, buzzer-bearer 3-pointer to end the third quarter was the exclamation point of the game. Finished with a game-high 27 points (all in the first three quarters) if Wensink can continue this play I’d expect him to get multiple D3 suitors.

[player_tooltip player_id="805223" first="Cole" last="McWhinnie"], 6’1 PG Toledo Christian 2021: Looked like himself before leaving with an injury early in the second. Nailed one out of two 3-point looks and got to the basket when needed. Hopefully his back recovers quickly because Toledo Christian plays Ottoville tomorrow in a big D4 battle. Wish I had more to say, but not a lot of analysis from his one quarter of action.

Conye Gaston, 5’10 SG Toledo Christian 2024: Gaston showed potential as a lead guard. Rushed his jumpers but seemed capable of playing at the speed of the varsity game during his freshman debut. Made two and-1 layups through contact. Threw the ball ahead to the open man which is very encouraging.

Will Schlabach, 5’9 PG Berlin Hiland 2021: Schlabach had a hot first half scoring. Shot it well from 3-point range and avoided potential shot blockers on drives. Once Toledo Christian figured out that he was Hiland’s primary shooting threat, he was constantly doubled to get the ball out of his hands. Ended with a team-high 18 points.

Ryan Miller, 6’2 PF Berlin Hiland 2021: Miller is the most physical member on Hiland. Crashed offensive glass and scored in the paint. Should put up solid numbers in conference play against less physical opponents.
