The lanky 6-foot-5, 170-pound swingman from Camas is hoping to play at the college level and to that end, he’s been working out and playing with Upper Left Legion the past couple of months. It’s been an adjustment since last season ended but Thompson has tried to prepare himself for all that is coming next.
“The first few months I barely played,” Thompson said. “But I have a court in my backyard so I was able to put in my own work. Then Upper Legion has really helped me out. They’ve helped me with my skill development, like getting my handles under control. And once the weight room opened up I was in there every day.”
The 170 pounds represents a gain of muscle on his body, one that’s long and lanky but versatile. Thompson can play at a number of positions on the court on both ends of the floor and with his physical growth still to come, there’s a lot of upside to his game. While he’s still flying largely under the radar when it comes to his college recruitment, Thompson noted that he’s heard from a number of schools from D-II to the JC levels. He recently made a campus visit to Multnomah.
“I want to play at the highest level that I can,” Thompson said. “But I want one that will keep it real with brute honesty. I need them to push me, but it has to be me too – I need to keep my intensity up all the time. As far as playing time, I obviously want to play but if it’s a higher level college, the experience is what I’m looking for too.”
Thompson hopes to play in some more events with Upper Left Legion as he prepares for the season ahead with Camas. “I want to keep it solid,” Thompson said. “I want to try to get as much skill development as I can before the season starts, just keep improving as much as I can.”
