Throughout the week, we’ll be taking a look at some of the best players in the gym, in a series of articles breaking down the top scorers, defenders, passers, etc. In this article, we take a look at the top passers that Tony Roe saw at the event. He was responsible for covering teams 1, 2, 7, 9, 10 and 16, so all players that he writes about this week will come from those teams. The other teams will be covered by Josh Block and Richard Stockton.
PG Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA (Aplington-Parkersburg – 2022)
Mackie is an outstanding athlete with the ability to finish above the rim, and he provided a few highlight-reel dunks throughout the evening. He’s a gifted scorer who can create his own looks and score from all three levels, but what stood out the most during his play last Saturday was his playmaking ability for others. His ability to get to the rim and get the defense to collapse is great, and he’s a willing passer on the drive-and-kick, looking for open shooters in the corner. He’s got good court vision and makes crisp passes to the shooting pockets of his teammates. With the graduation of Riley Oberhauser, Mackie should have the ball in his hands even more for the Falcons this winter, and his playmaking ability should be on full display.
PG Jackie Truong (Perryville MO – 2022)
Truong is a great ball-handler who does a good job probing the defense and getting to the bucket, utilizing change of pace to get by his defender. He’s a true pass-first guard who is always looking for an open teammate, looking to push the tempo and find teammates for easy layups ahead of the defense.
PG Drew Schnicker (Valley – 2021)
Schnicker’s game reminds me of former Mount Pleasant guard Brady Sartorius. They have similar builds, both have great mid-range games, and good feel for the game. Schnicker was his team’s primary ball-handler throughout the evening and was tasked with getting other guys opportunities to score, and he thrived in that role. He handles the ball well, can get to the paint and find open shooters, and he looks to push the tempo as well.
PG Brayden Dinkla (Winterset – 2023)
Dinkla was playing on a team with Trey Shearer Trey Shearer 5'10" | PG Montezuma | 2021 State IA , so he didn’t have the ball in his hands a ton, but he made things happen when he had a chance. He’s a good drive-and-kick guard who sees the floor well and has good awareness of just when to make the pass. He makes the extra pass, passing up a good shot for a great one, and is also a capable 3-point shooter as well.
PG Joey Tollefson (West Marshall – 2022)
Tollefson is an aggressive lead guard who looks to attack the defense early in the possession, getting to the rim for finishes himself or to kick out to open shooters. He’s a good ball-handler who handles pressure well and sees the floor. He makes crisp passes and is always looking to make the extra pass.
