The guard position however stands out with pure scores to elite shooters and complete floor generals. This position runs deep with quality players throughout the recently released PrepHoops 2023 Rankings.
This first installment of impact players from the guard position in the class of 2023, some would call the cream of the crop.
RJ Johnson RJ Johnson 6'3" | PG Grissom | 2023 State #215 Nation AL , 6’3 PG, Grissom: This kid definitely looks the part getting off the bus with his physical features, however, don’t be confused he is much more than just a shiny piece used to look good HE CAN PLAY! Considered one of the top 2 or 3 players in the class his ability to run a team at a young age is high level. He can shoot with range but needs to continue becoming more consistent with his motion and release. He is a monster at attacking the basket and playing bully ball against smaller defenders. He has a mature game which will only get more dominant as the years go on.
Win Miller Win Miller 6'3" | SF Vestavia Hills | 2023 State #240 Nation AL , 6’3 SG, Vestavia Hills: Another guy who could be considered as the top player in this class has really improved over the last 2 summers. The added size and athleticism has boosted his stock tremendously. His run this summer with ProOne Select showed he is a legit scorer from anywhere on the floor and is a legit D1 prospect. Needs to continue improving on breaking defenders down off the dribble in one on one half-court situations. Once he becomes unguardable off the dribble will only more open up his deadly catch and shoot ability.
Alex Odam Alex Odam 6'3" | SG Piedmont | 2023 State AL , 6’0 PG, Piedmont: “Sauce” is the best way to describe his game. He has a crafty handle that allows him the ability to beat most all defenders off the dribble in one on one and open court situations. His ability to shoot the ball from deep off that dribble is what has him considered one of the best guards in the class. He also is a very good passer with the ability to make those around him better. A commitment to the weight room over the next few summers will only boost his stock and his game.
John Broom John Broom 6'5" | SG Jacksonville | 2023 State AL , 6’4 SG, Jacksonville: A legit (no cliche) 3 level scorer he can put it on the floor and score at the basket, he can pull up in the midrange and score on pull-ups or floaters, and he can stroke it from deep. He has really improved over the last 12 months and looks as if he can’t stop growing. He is a long and rangy guard that can guard multiple positions all while being the primary scorer. He is a terror in the passing lanes which allows him to get out and thrive in transition. Needs to continue to work on shot selection as his level raises but can’t get mad at a guy who can erase the last play and keep firing!
Johntarius Green Johntarius Green 6'0" | PG Montgomery Catholic | 2023 AL , 6’0 PG, Montgomery Catholic: “The Floor General” this guy simple as put can run a team. He is a pass-first pg that thrives in controlling the pace and getting his teammates involved. His body continues to develop as the added strength to his frame allows him the motor needed to be the primary ball-handler. He has good vision and passing ability. He can score the ball but the next level of his development will be to put up big scoring numbers on a consistent basis from all areas of the floor. He is a pitbull on the defensive end of the floor and could be considered the best on-ball defender in the class when he is locked in. With Justin Buford moving on look for his numbers to significantly increase this season for the Knights.
