The 20 young ball players that came looked to get better during the course of individual drill work, with pick and roll offense and finishing at the rim and with jumpers being a main point of emphasis this week. During the 3-on-3 session, players were able to showcase their playmaking whether they were handling, finishing or shooting the ball. Finally, the games were where players could put on display their full skill and potential. This list is consisting of the best shooters during this event, combining drill work with the 5-on-5 run as well.
Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH – Beechcroft: The big man has exhibited his increased range over the duration of these open runs, Thursday was no exception. During the 3-on-3 drills he did not get chances to shoot because he was too busy showing his soft touch around the basket. Lyles heated up late in the day and put on a show that made other players stand up and watch. The most impressive part is that he hit three point jump shots in different ways; he was money with the catch-and-shoot and crafty making moves before pulling up and shooting over defenders. His increased range allows his team to be versatile, which will lead to another run at a state title.
LB Towns- Linden McKinley: This pick is somewhat based on potential and what has been shown from this young man thus far. The young Towns only hit a couple of deep shots during the open run because of how dominate a certain team was, but he was money in the drills and ended his night with a tough three and sinking a free throw to end the game. LB has a beautiful looking shot with a high release point, needed because of his 5-foot-8 height, and the follow through of a person who has been shooting a basketball since a baby. He is automatic at the free throw line as well, stepping up with confidence at knocking them down.
Dailyn Swain Dailyn Swain 6'7" | SF Africentric | 2023 State #81 Nation OH – Africentric: The kid that may have had the most natural talent in the building flashed his ranged over the course of the evening. Swain took the individual drills serious and completed them crisply, knocking down deep three after deep three. This talented young man should have been more assertive during the 5-on-5 games, he was completely unguardable on the court. After he pulled up from deep and nailed it once, he began to gain more confidence with each dribble, going on a hot streak after that. The lanky swing man proved that he can shoot the ball with the best of them and if he can carry this style of play into the season then the Columbus City League south may run through Allegheny Ave.
Ricky Taylor- Walnut Ridge: Quick release, high release point and long arms can equate to a potentially amazing three-and-D type of player. Young Mr. Taylor put those skills on display this past Thursday with a shooting performance that had this writer shocked. During drill time he was patient learning the moves and being sure to finish the correct way. The calm in which he handled bad passes, how fast he got the ball out of his hand and the confidence in which he shot the ball was impressive. Taylor can be the guy that can carry the tough, defensive Walnut Ridge mentality into this season to help the Scots compete to get back to a Columbus City League championship.
Daylen Fullen- Eastmoor Academy: The best shooter in the gym on Thursday, and it really was not close, was this young man. Fullen started his hot shooting during the drills and never looked back, with mid range jumpers falling and three pointers looking effortless when he shot them. During the 5-on-5 games, if he was left open then the defense might as well get ready to take the ball out the bottom of the rim and set up their offense. Fullen was not phased by anything in his way, making it seem as if he was throwing a golf ball into the ocean. Fullen was not used as much last season with the Warriors having established guards that did not need much rest but this season he can be a clutch shooter for the Warriors basketball team.
