Instead of doing the usual club basketball scene, the athletic 6-foot-4, 175-pound swingman from Westview has been focused on doing what he can during this unique time period. In the meantime, college programs are keeping in touch and looking forward to see him play and he’s doing the best he can with all the changes that have been going on this summer.
“It’s been unusual for sure,” Grable said. “I haven’t been able to see a lot of my teammates since March which sucks but we have stayed in touch. I have just had to start playing basketball outside more which before I didn’t as much since we had summer league and team camp down in Eugene last summer. I have just been getting my body right and ready for the season because it will be evident who did stuff this off season and who didn’t come December 28th.”
Best known for his outstanding run-and-jump athletic ability, Grable started out playing up front in high school but has been developing as a perimeter player. That has continued to be his focus this summer.
“I have really been working on my ball handling and shooting,” Grable said. “Those are both of my evident weaknesses I would say when you watch my game. Throughout the years I have played down low really never brought the ball up the floor which I think will change for my senior year but once I improve my ball handling and shooting you will see a whole different player than you saw before since I think it will help me play into my athleticism.”
Because of his aforementioned athleticism and his potential as a perimeter player, Grable has garnered the attention of college programs. A whole host of schools – quite a few at the D-II level – have been in touch and he mentioned that Chaminade and Redlands have been two of the latest. One D-I school has taken quite a bit of interest and Grable has enjoyed their conversations.
“I’ve been talking to Idaho almost everyday for a few months now,” Grable said. “I talk to Coach Tripp who is an assistant coach over there. I would say Idaho is the closest to offering out of the schools I am talking to but I don’t think that will happen until after my Senior Season because I would say the schools I am talking to and the ones who have been in contact with Coach Wolf are looking at me as a 1-3 college player so once they see me as that this season they will have a more feel for my game.”
Grable is looking forward to a big senior season. It will be delayed a couple of months but he’s staying positive and is ready to roll.
“We are going to be young,” Grable said. “We have 3 out of 5 starters coming back so I feel pretty good about that. Sky is the limit every year for Westview I feel like I think that’s the way our last few seasons have went. No one really in the State knows how good we are gonna be every year but we always end up being one of the best teams in the State in my opinion.”
“I am hopeful for a season but I am also ready if they pull the plug because this is something we will never experience again in our lifetime once this has passed through,” Grable continued. “Everyone on our team is ready and will be ready to go out there and compete every time down the floor.”
Grable currently ranks as the #16 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings.
