Recruiting Report: Cam Whitmore (2022)
Exactly one year ago those who are invested into the Baltimore high school hoops scene weren’t sure what to expect of 2022 wing/forward Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD . After a freshman season that took place with him on the sideline nursing a broken tibia his official high school debut would be put on hold. Once he was cleared not long after the 2019-20 season, he laced up for an all-star game and less than a minute in, the 6-foot-7 Archbishop Spalding product broke the same bone that kept him out for his freshman campaign. This would mean he would also miss his entire spring and summer AAU season in hopes to return to the hardwood as a sophomore and finally prove why he was such a highly touted prospect coming out of middle school.
After months of rehab and getting support from his family and friends, Whitmore took the court and quickly reminded that despite not playing for a year, he hadn’t lost a step. If anything, he was better due to the growth of his body and improved athleticism.
“Once I got to my third game, I think which was against Pallotti, I started to feel comfortable again. I was moving a lot better and just felt like I was myself again. The first game I stepped on the floor it felt really weird to be honest. As the year went on I started getting my shot back together and started getting to the rim easier and aggressively,” Whitmore said as he reflected on his return last winter.
Whitmore emerged as a top player in the MIAA A Conference boasting a stat line of 15 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 2.3 steals per game as he led Spalding to an 18-11 record. His best outing came in the first-round of the playoffs against top-seeded Gilman where he dominated in every facet scoring 34 points.
He told Prep Hoops that he still would consider his leg at 80 percent healthy right now. Considering how often he plays above the rim, it’s scary to think that Whitmore will have even more explosion when that leg gets to a full 100 percent.
I saw Whitmore in action recently taking on tough competition in the I-95 Coalition League playing for Team Melo’s 16U squad. He picked up where he left off in the high school season scoring 24 points (11-of-15 from the field), grabbing six rebounds, recording six steals and blocking three shots against a Team Durant team with multiple mid-to-high major prospects.
Once the June 15 date came around Whitmore saw his recruitment explode. He told Prep Hoops that Virginia Tech is the school that is recruiting him the most aggressively at the moment. He also named Florida, Maryland, LSU and Seton Hall as schools who are in constant contact.
It’s always great to see how a kid responds to adversity and Whitmore’s progress has exceeded expectations up to this point. As time moves forward, getting his jumper more consistent along with becoming extremely comfortable off the dribble with combo moves are two things he’s really focusing on improving this summer and fall.
Whitmore has already established himself as a high-major prospect, but if he stays on the path of development that I’ve seen over the past calendar year, I would say he’s going to be a top prospect nationally in the 2022 class who is pursued by blue-blood programs. I’m never one to throw statements like that out about players, but Whitmore simply checks all of the boxes that those programs look for.
