Here were some of the guys who looked good:
Caden Grinde Caden Grinde 6'3" | SG Spring Grove | 2021 State MN , MN Rise
Grinde’s effort was hard to miss Saturday. The Spring Grove swingman was a ball of energy on both ends of the floor, helping Rise win three games. He attacks the offensive glass, cuts hard off the ball and did a great job making his counterparts uncomfortable on the offensive end of the floor. He showed tremendous burst attacking closeouts and his athleticism allows him to finish at the rim with ease.
Elijah Morris Elijah Morris 6'2" | SG Perham | 2021 State MN , WC United
Everybody who follows MN hoops knows Morris is billed as one of the top shooters in the 2021 class. He’s a sniper in every sense. But the rest of his game has come a long way in the last two years, as he’s much more than just a terrific knockdown shooter now. His ability to handle the ball, run the offense, make good decisions and control tempo was invaluable for WC United on Saturday. He’s still a weapon off the ball using screens and stretching out a defense, but his overall floor game makes him a difference-maker all-around.
Spencer Goetz Spencer Goetz 6'3" | SF Chaska | 2021 State MN , Fury Zurn
Fury Zurn had a tough matchup in its first game facing a loaded D1 Minnesota team and while it didn’t go well, Goetz was a guy who seemed to hold his own. The Chaska swingman is long, athletic and plays with a hot motor on both ends of the floor. He doesn’t put up huge scoring numbers, but he’s tough on the defensive end of the floor. He uses his strength to limit penetration and his length to disrupt and contest shots and passes. He’s good off the ball on offense, excelling as a cutter and finisher around the rim.
Jackson Purcell Jackson Purcell 6'4" | SF Eastview | 2021 State MN , MN Select Ohnstad
Purcell was terrific for Select Ohnstad Saturday, providing terrific two-way energy and seemingly giving his team a jolt from the start. He’s a big guard who does a great job mixing it up defensively, using his size to hassle opposing ballhandlers. He was relentless attacking the rim, finding gaps, or just breaking down primary defenders on his way to the paint – and his size is an asset once he gets there.
Ryan Miles Ryan Miles 6'5" | SF Richfield | 2021 State MN , Fury Syverson
Miles is another big guard who can impact the game in a lot of ways. He’s capable of chasing smaller guards around, using his length, or guarding up against bigger wings because of his strength and smarts. He’s a creative offensive player who can score effectively in the mid-range or get to the paint – and he’s an adept playmaker. He was always under control and did a great job creating offense for himself or his teammates despite his team losing to a good MN Select team.
Kegan Heiderscheidt Kegan Heiderscheidt 6'7" | SF Sleepy Eye | 2021 State MN , MN Rise
Heiderscheidt didn’t score a lot for Rise on Saturday, but his impact on both ends of the floor was certainly high. The Sleepy Eye swingman is incredibly long and fluid, and his floor game is advanced. He’s a strong slasher, using his length and handles to break down primary defenders and finishing at the rim efficiently. He’s a terror on the defensive end, as he’s aggressive in the passing lanes and excellent as a helper on drives because he’s long enough to deter shots at the rim, but also quick enough to recover to his man.
