Rivals.com, 247 Sports, and of course Prep Hoops all have Camden Heide Camden Heide 6'7" | SF Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #129 Nation UT is a top 60 ranked player (or lower) and anybody that has seen him play understands why he is ranked that high.
It was a tough winter at Wayzata going 11-17 as it took nearly three months for the team to find their grove.
“I think we lost a great group of seniors in the 2019 class and then the senior group we had this year, a lot of those guys came into the season late from football,” Heide said. “They won the state championship on a Friday, their first basketball practice was on a Tuesday, and our first game was on a Thursday. So it was a quick turnaround early in the season.”
“We also dealt with a lot of injuries. I missed our first six games, our point guard was out for most of the season with a broken wrist, and we had a bunch of mild nagging injuries. So we didn’t have a full team most of the year. It’s not a great excuse but we dealt with adversity that we never really got through until very late in the season (Wayzata won nine of their last 13 games).”
Regardless of last year’s record we are all aware of how good Wayzata could be. State title contender good.
“I think personally, after talking to some of the guys, I think we can win state,” Heide. “But it comes down to each of us giving it our best individually, and coming together as a team. We are kind of a younger team now with mostly juniors and a couple of quality seniors but I think we can put it together and I think we can get pretty far. But we have to focus on one game at a time, and one set of games at a time, and then coming together we have what it takes to win a lot of games.”
As far as that ranking as a player? Heide is ready to back that up while they make that state run.
t’s satisfying for a player to a degree, but this type of respect also comes with expectations and targeting.
“I think it is a positive as it shows the hard work that I have put in over the years,” Heide said. “It can also be a negative in that it puts a target on your back. That can be a good thing too as it makes you compete harder, and I love competing with any person, player, or team in the country. When you are say, number one in Minnesota people will know who you are and come after you.”
Camden has put together an offer list that includes Minnesota and Purdue, as well as Ohio State, Creighton, Arizona, Marquette, Virginia Tech, Texas, Cal, Iowa, Wisconsin, and others. When schools could start calling the 2022 class on June 15th the programs that contacted Heide were Virginia Tech, Virginia, Michigan, Ohio State, Louisville, Purdue, Texas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Marquette, and California.
A number of programs have offered and are showing interest, but who is calling with the most interest this summer?
“I’d say the most right now is Texas, Arizona, Ohio State, Purdue, and Virginia Tech,” said Heide. “I haven’t had a chance to go visit those schools besides Purdue, but I am super interested in visiting all of those schools.”
