There was a lot of incredible talent all weekend and was a great showcase of the elite talent the state of Texas has to offer. Be on the lookout for the rest of my in-depth analysis from this tournament!
Donovan Armstrong 5’11 Del Valle High School, ATX Power
Donovan is great at creating for his teammates and showed a real ability to pull off difficult and flashy passes that set up his teammates well for open shots. His ability to handle the ball and make the right reads was essential in breaking the full-court pressure his team routinely saw at this tournament. He is great on the boards and hustles very hard, even for an undersized wing/ combo guard. He showed great ability to work and operate out of the triple threat and was able to get to the rim with ease when matched up with a guard.
Kaleb Bennet 6’0 Ellison High School, Pro Skills Austin 17U
Kaleb is a relentless finisher at the rim and is an elite scoring option. His ability to finish at the rim despite contact was incredible and he fought off defenders well at the rim and was able to get his shot off over anyone. He is an incredible athlete and showed off a few times with some impressive offensive rebounding tip dunks. He is a good shooter off the catch and when he can get his feet set. On the defensive side of the ball, he is a menace, blocking shots off the backboard and playing great on-ball defense. His ability to fight through screens was very impressive, as he made his opponents very uncomfortable all weekend long.
Dylan Mackey 6’0 Aldine Davis High School, Texas Takeover Major 17U
Dylan is a creative guard with a great ability to finish over bigger defenders. He is relentless at the rim and fights off contact very well. He is creative when he goes up with the ball and has an array of finishes he can pull off. He plays the passing lanes very well on defense and came up with a multitude of steals and was able to easily flip them into easy looks at the rim on the other end. He loves running on the fast break and putting pressure on the defense in the full court. He is even a good rebounder for his size, his hustle and motor should easily translate to the next level.
Blake Nielsen 6’3 Westlake High School, THP Elite 17U White
Blake is a deadly shooter with deep NBA range. He is extremely comfortable off the catch and flies off of pin downs and screens with ease. If he gets a chance to get his feet set, he is going to make you pay. He plays with confidence and a swagger to his game; he knows he can get his shot off quickly and seemingly over anyone. He shoots well off the dribble, but his real prowess lies in his ability to shoot off the catch. I would like to see more work on his ability to finish at the rim and get to some midrange opportunities. With his ability to stretch the floor he will get a multitude of open looks like this.
