There was a lot of incredible talent all weekend and was a great showcase of the elite talent the state of Texas has to offer. Be on the lookout for the rest of my in-depth analysis from this tournament!
Alex Vatrachi- 6’9 St. Thomas Episcopal, Houston Defenders 17U
Alex is an incredible defender who plays the game with incredible ferocity and energy. His motor never seems to shut off which allows him to play engaged on-ball defense. His frame and quick feet allow him to dictate what an offensive player does and made so many of his opponents uncomfortable and forced them to change their shot angles or shots all together. He was constantly forcing his opponents into turnovers and getting under their skin with tenacious defense. He has all of the tools to be an incredible force on this end of the floor at the next level but needs more work in his offensive game.
Chris Wiseman- 6’5 Langham Creek High School, Texas Takeover Kemp 17U
Chris is an undersized forward who protects the rim with ease and changes his opponents’ shots at the rim. He forces his opponents to be so uncomfortable when they come into his paint. He is great on the glass and showed an elite ability to box out his opponents and clean up every opportunity on the glass.
Landry Woods- 6’6 Georgetown High School, Fury
Landry has great rebounding ability, and showed good experience clearing space and sealing off opponents to destroy them on the glass. He is a good rim protector, and his impressive size allows him to protect the paint with ease. He also has many great post moves in his arsenal that he gets to very easily and comfortably, indicating a lot of work. This upcoming year I hope he begins to work on his shooting range to begin to stretch the floor. He also needs work on his handle to become skilled enough to take defenders off the dribble, which could become deadly for him as he engages and disengages defenders in the post and mid-range.
Davon Wright- 6’5 Cypress Springs High School, Texas Takeover Major 17U
Davon is a long forward who protects the paint very well and came up with a good amount of blocks this weekend. He has quick feet and a real athletic ability to run the court, and even played great full-court defense tying up ball handlers and intercepting outlet passes. He skies for rebounds and blocked out his opponents with ease. I would like to see more off an outside into his game, and a focus on ball handling and shooting. He has all the right physical tools to be able to dominate as an oversized point forward.
Jeronimo Villegas- 6’8 Cypress Lakes High School, Houston Defenders 17U
Jeronimo is a huge power forward with great skill and ability to finish around the rim and clean up his teammates misses. He is a tenacious rebounder on both sides of the floor and showed great skill and ability to seal off defenders and gather every rebound possible. He is incredibly skilled in the post and has a multitude of moves he can get to for easy looks for himself. He is great at finishing through contact and showed great strength and ability to push through and rise up even with defenders all over him. He has a soft touch on his little bunny hooks and off-hand layups, usually a good indicator of good ball control and shooting touch. During his senior campaign, I hope he works on his handle and ability to beat defenders off the dribble, and some moves to engage and disengage defenders in the post. He is also a great rim protector and deflected and turned away many shots at the rim.
