Small School, Big Game: 2022 Class 2A Top Wings

<p>This series will take a look at some lesser-known predominately unranked players from smaller schools across Colorado that have or will tear it up at the varsity level next season. You might not be able to find their hometown on a map, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a name for themselves and now jumping onto our radars. Next up, we have 2A wings from the 2022 class to keep an eye on.</p> <p><strong>Ben Buhler – Denver Christian </strong></p> <p>Buhler led all of 2A sophomores in scoring, and when you take a look at it, he led almost the whole state in scoring for the sophomore class. In only his second year, he led the team in scoring in one of the top teams in the 2A/1A Mile High League. He led his team to an 18-6 overall record as he put 17.9 points and 4.7 boards a game. Bugler used his 6’2’2 frame to get what he wanted and also was one of the best shooters in all of 2A as he hit 45 3-pointers at a 40% clip.</p> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="618887" first="Connor" last="Showalter"] – Mancos</strong></p> <p>The Showalter brothers had themselves quite the year this season, and how cool would that be to be able to play alongside your brother. Mancos was named the San Juan Basin champs this year after they finished off with a 19-4 record, and their leading scorer was their 6’4’4 sophomore standout, [player_tooltip player_id="618887" first="Connor" last="Showalter"]. Connor is ranked with us, and how could we not. He put up 15.6 points and 5.4 rebounds a game, and he also was a playmaking wing that found the open man. His 3.6 assists and 2.8 steals a game set him apart and showed that while he is who the team relies on to score, he is willing also to go the extra mile to secure a win. Mancos is in good hands with Connor playing the way that he did last season. Hopefully, we can get him at a Prep Hoops event or two.</p> <p><strong>Clay Robinson – Yuma </strong></p> <p>The 2A District 2 champs this year was the Yuma Indians, and they had themselves a team that bought in ultimately. While they surely will miss their senior leadership this year, their best player was their sophomore combo guard Clay Robinson. The 6’2’2 wing scored in double figures for the last ten games of the season. He put up 15.4 points and 8.3 rebounds and also set up teammates who got the pressure off of him with over three assists a game. Robinson does a bit of everything, and his game is still evolving. He will be a 2A player to watch next season.</p> <p><strong>Michael Brophy – Thomas MacLaren </strong></p> <p>Brophy is a 6’0’0 combo-guard/wing out of the Springs that, as a sophomore, played well. He was never afraid of the moment and was easily one of the team’s best players. Brophy did it all for the Highlanders as he put up a wild stat line of 12.4 points and over eight boards a game as well. One he found his groove, he was difficult to slow down and showed that when called upon, he can deliver. Junior year he might be one of the top players in all of 2A if he keeps it up.</p> <p><strong>Sam Lundy – Heritage Christian </strong></p> <p>Heritage Christian is coming off of a solid season last year as they were one of the better teams in arguably the toughest division in 2A. The Eagles held their own and have a solid returning class coming as one of the top players on the team was their sophomore standout, Sam Lundy. Lundy was a consistent scorer for Heritage Christian as he tied for the second-leading scorer at 12.1 points a game. Lundy was productive by getting to the rim and finishing inside. He was aggressive on the boards, and that forced him to play down low a bit. He will have to open up the rest of his game if Heritage Christian is going to rely on him, but he was good this year and gathered momentum.</p>
