There are so many players to observe, especially in a big state like Texas. Some guys just don’t get the same amount of attention that others are afforded. It may not be fair, but it’s reality.
I wanted to highlight a few guards in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who have flown a bit under the radar.
Logan Epes – 2022 6’3’’ Shooting Guard Bishop Lynch HS – Epes has shown the ability to hit contested jumpers from mid-range. He has a nice little turnaround jumper in his arsenal and can knock down the three-ball when left open. His perimeter defending is solid as well. Epes should see more time as a junior now that he has a year of varsity ball under his belt.
Donovan Hernandez Donovan Hernandez 5'9" | PG Frisco Independence | 2021 State TX – 2021 5’9’’ Point Guard Frisco Independence HS – The pass-first point guard can operate well in space and in traffic. His quickness and playmaking ability make up for his lack of size. Hernandez can hit tough shots when he needs to, but he prefers to play the role of facilitator for his team. In addition, he is a scrappy defender with quick hands.
Neal Utrup – 2021 6’1’’ Shooting Guard Prosper HS – Utrup lets the game come to him. He can score in bunches when he gets hot from deep. He is an excellent three-point shooter from the catch. The soon-to-be senior doesn’t allow the ball to stick to him on offense and keeps the rock moving. He also finishes well in transition.
Sky Tschurr – 2022 Combo Guard (JAB White) Dallas Jesuit – Tschurr is a knock down three-point shooter with deep range. He moves well without the ball, knows his spots, and gets to them. He spent the year at the JV level, but he should be upgraded the varsity roster this season. His shooting will allow him to contribute immediately.
Dylan Gibbons – 2023 Combo Guard (Nike EAD 2023 Black) Dallas Jesuit – Gibbons possesses exceptional handles. He can utilize his skill as a ball handler to hurt opponents with his passing as well as his scoring. He can shoot the three off the dribble or from the catch. He can make things happen at both the one and two guard spots and adapts his game to fit whatever role he is asked to play.
Brandon Hardison – 2022 5’7’’ Point Guard (BYG Elite 2023) Plano East HS – Hardison is a very explosive lead guard with tremendous quickness. He is a pure scorer who can get it done from all three levels. His instincts and body control are great on the drive. I’ve also had the privilege of seeing him drain some big-time shots with the game on the line.
