The point guard position looks filled with promising talents from an early stage, with a large portion of the top-25 rankings occupied by lead guards. Today we take a look at the top-10 ranked point guards in the 2023 class. [player_tooltip player_id="962198" first="Taison" last="Chatman"], the #1 ranked freshman, is capable of playing either guard spot but is listed as a SG in our rankings so he is not included in this list.

[player_tooltip player_id="962201" first="Maxsamus" last="Wilson"] (6’3 2023 PG, South St. Paul)- One of the best passers in the class, Maxsamus loves to set his teammates up to score and is able to find openings that not many young guards can. He has a flashy handle, can hit from deep off the dribble, or get in the lane and knock down floaters. Averaged 12 ppg during a productive freshman season.

[player_tooltip player_id="962205" first="Jalen" last="Cain"] (6’2 2023 PG, Minnetonka)- Playing at the AAAA level and in the loaded Lake Conference, [player_tooltip player_id="962205" first="Jalen" last="Cain"] is already battle tested as a point guard. He has range to hit from beyond the three point line, and has a crafty handle allowing him to beat his man to the rim. Jalen is an unselfish player who did a good job of feeding talented post player [player_tooltip player_id="846115" first="Cameron" last="Steele"] on the block, while scoring 7 ppg of his own.

[player_tooltip player_id="962206" first="Max" last="Shikenjanski"] (6’1 2023 PG, Stillwater)- Max had one of the most productive freshman seasons in the state by averaging just under 17 ppg, including 11 games of 20+ points. A slippery ball handler, Max is able to weave his way through defenders and contort his body in mid-air to finish in a variety of ways around the rim. From outside he has deep range and an extremely quick release to beat the close-out.

[player_tooltip player_id="962207" first="Ibrahim" last="El-Amin"] (5’11 2023 PG, Burnsville)- A player who excels with the ball in his hands, Ibo has no problem getting a bucket on his own or setting up his teammates to score. He has drive-and-dish ability, but is also capable of stopping on a dime for a mid-range jumper. Both off the dribble or off the catch from deep he gets great elevation to shoot over size. El-Amin averaged 17.7 ppg as a freshman.

[player_tooltip player_id="962210" first="Quyavant" last="Douglas"] (6’ 2023 PG, Brooklyn Center)- A varsity contributor for three years now, Quyavant put up 11.6 ppg as a freshman, and is arguably the most explosive player on this list. He gets great elevation off two feet, and is a bulldog of a finisher who gets in the paint and powers through contact to finish. Quyavant also has high potential on the defensive end as an extremely quick player.

[player_tooltip player_id="962216" first="Will" last="Underwood"] (6’ 2023 PG, Mahtomedi)- [player_tooltip player_id="962216" first="Will" last="Underwood"] is one of those players who doesn’t have a standout trait, because he’s so well-rounded as a player. He’s quick, has athleticism going up to finish, can shoot from outside, and has a crafty handle to create his own shot. In transition he’s able to push the tempo and get to the rim or facilitate to a slashing teammate. He averaged 7.2 ppg for an all around solid Mahtomedi team.

[player_tooltip player_id="962217" first="DeWayne" last="Givens"] (6’ 2023 PG, Minnehaha Academy)- DeWayne played varsity basketball while in middle school for St. Paul Johnson, and is now attending Minnehaha Academy for high school where he was a standout JV player. He has a unique combination of speed and strength that allows him to get in the paint and finish through contact. DeWayne is also a high level football player, and last averaged 11.1 ppg as an 8th grader playing varsity.

[player_tooltip player_id="962218" first="Nasir" last="Whitlock"] (6’ 2023 PG, DeLaSalle)- Another freshman who stood out at the JV level, Nasir is a shifty ball handler with deep shooting range. Whitlock can create his own shot off the dribble while also excelling at running off screens to catch-and-shoot from three. Defensively he’s great at jumping passing lanes and is able to facilitate to cutting teammates in transition.

[player_tooltip player_id="962220" first="Alex" last="Jones"] (6’1 2023 PG, Bloomington Jefferson)- A physically advanced athlete with a strong frame and some explosiveness around the rim, Alex excels at finishing in the paint. He can attack off the dribble using a tight handle, while also cutting hard off-ball to get some open looks. Though he’s not a knockdown shooter just yet, he can make defenders pay for leaving him open beyond the arc. Put up 7 ppg as a freshman.

[player_tooltip player_id="962222" first="Jessye" last="Lewis Jr"]. (6’ 2023 PG, Hiawatha Collegiate)- Jessye put up video game numbers as a freshman, finishing the year with averages of 24.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. An extremely shifty guard, Jessye is one of the most creative ball handlers I’ve seen at his age, able to create open jumpers for himself with ease. Jessye is also an excellent drive-and-dish facilitator and has range extending well beyond the arc.
