Somerset County was one of the New Jersey’s best last season as four different teams played in a sectional final. Rutgers Prep, Gill St.Bernard’s and Watchung Hills all finished the season in the top 10, while Bound Brook was one of the top teams in Group 1. [player_tooltip player_id="896632" first="Michael" last="Bressler"] and [player_tooltip player_id="850499" first="Trey" last="Patterson"] were honored with All-State selections in 2019-20, but they are not the only quality players in Somerset County. Here are the top breakout candidates in Somerset County.

[player_tooltip player_id="900322" first="Davie" last="McLarty"], SG Bound Brook 2021

Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id="901978" first="Quadir" last="Harrell"] is one of the top play-makers in the county and has a good running mate in McLarty. The junior guard always plays with his head up and is a good passer as he led Bound Brook in assists. McLarty can score at all three levels as he can knock down shots from deep, finish around the basket and score in the mid-range. He is also a solid defender as he led the team in steals as a junior. McLarty’s ability to play on both ends of the floor makes him a candidate to have a breakout senior campaign.

Drew Kania, 6’7 SF/PF Gill St. Bernard’s 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="902736" first="Isaac" last="Hester"] was also a candidate, but the freshman guard started for the Knights. Kania came off the bench for head coach Mergin Sina last season and should take Princeton commit [player_tooltip player_id="850327" first="Zach" last="Martini"]’s place in the starting lineup. The 6’7 forward can handle the ball on the perimeter and is an underrated passer. Kania has a nice touch around the basket and moves well off the ball. It will be hard to replace Martini’s production down low, but Kania has a chance to be one of the top forwards in Somerset County next season.

[player_tooltip player_id="901961" first="Ryan" last="Petit"], 6’1 SG Rutgers Prep 2022

[player_tooltip player_id="902744" first="Cameron" last="Piggee"] and [player_tooltip player_id="902754" first="Jordan" last="Atkins"] were also considered for this spot, but Petit was the obvious choice. The sophomore shooting guard was the unsung hero for the Argonauts as he dove for loose balls, took charges and did the dirty work for one of New Jersey’s top teams. Petit is an instinctive defender who jumps passing lanes for steals. He is a good outside shooter and moves well off the ball to free himself on the perimeter. [player_tooltip player_id="850499" first="Trey" last="Patterson"], [player_tooltip player_id="850507" first="Noah" last="Harris"] and [player_tooltip player_id="850671" first="Otega" last="Oweh"] are ready to lead Rutgers Prep in 2020-21 and Petit is ready to elevate his game alongside them.

[player_tooltip player_id="929528" first="Trevor" last="Bokach"], 6’4 SG Watchung Hills 2021

The Warriors will dearly miss Bressler next season as the diminutive guard set the school record for points and three-pointers made in a season. [player_tooltip player_id="900332" first="Chad" last="Martini"] joined Bressler on the All-Group 4 first team, while Bokach returns in the backcourt. The 6’4 guard is extremely versatile as he can run the offense for the Warriors or play off the ball. Bokach plays hard on both ends of the floor and is a solid shooter. Watchung Hills needs someone to replace Bressler’s scoring next season and Bokach looks ready to do that in 2020-21.

[player_tooltip player_id="931021" first="Darren" last="Tuck"], 6’4 SG Immaculata 2022

Dominican commit [player_tooltip player_id="850365" first="Jaden" last="Honis"] paced the Spartans’ attack last season, while Ramapo commit [player_tooltip player_id="935095" first="Jordan" last="Myers"] was a force on the boards. With both players graduating, Tuck is the new main guy for Immaculata after averaging a little under 10 points per game. The 6’4 guard attacks the basket with a purpose and does not mind contact. Tuck is one of the top defenders in the Skyland Conference as he led the team in blocks and was second in steals last season. Immaculata needs Tuck to take a big step next season as the Spartans look to win 21 games for the second straight year.
