Millville, Vineland and Bridgeton all had down seasons in 2019-20, but should bounce back next season. The county is full of under the radar prospects capable of putting up solid numbers. Here are the top players to watch in Cumberland County.
Jabbar Barriento, SG Millville 2023
Millville loses its top four scorers from last year’s team and needs someone to step up in 2020-21. Barriento may not have received a lot of starts in 2019-20, but he is ready to take his game to the next level. The freshman guard has a good release on his shot and shoots the ball with confidence. Barriento has a good handle and is unafraid of taking the ball to the basket. Millville looks to improve from its 11-16 record last season and Barriento could be the key to that turnaround.
Yamere Diggs, 5’8 PG Vineland 2022
Vineland may have struggled in 2019-20, but that does not diminish the season Diggs had. The 5’8 guard is lightning quick and knows how to draw contact around the basket. Diggs is more than just a slasher as he can knock down shots from behind the arc. He is a good on-ball defender and plays with composure on the ball. Diggs has the talent to make Vineland one of the sleeper teams in South Jersey Group 4 in 2020-21.
Jabril Bowman, SF Bridgeton 2022
Bowman was one of the more underrated wings in South Jersey as he had a good 2019-20 campaign. The sophomore forward has a nice touch around the basket and can score through contact. Bowman has a good handle and can put the ball on the deck. He is tough to keep off the glass as he fights for every rebound. Bridgeton only won six games last season, but that number should increase next year with Bowman’s increased role in the offense.
Ryan Williams, 6’0 SF Vineland 2021
Williams may be an undersized forward, but he knows how to get the job done. The burly 6’0 forward uses his strong frame to carve out space for himself down low. Williams has a nice touch around the basket and is capable of going off at any time. He can stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting, but can also blow by his defender in the half court. Vineland’s duo of Diggs and Williams is good enough to carry Vineland to a good 2020-21 campaign.
Zameir Bryant, SG Millville 2021
Barriento is not the only Millville player who should expect a big jump in production as Bryant looks poised for a big senior season. He knows how to beat his defender off the dribble and can finish around the basket. Bryant has a solid mid-range game and has a good looking release on his jumper. He is a solid rebounder and is an underrated passer. Barriento and Bryant will get more looks on the offensive end, which could translate into more wins for Millville in 2020-21.
