However, the COVID 19 grassroots season shutdown has made it possible to review the high school talent more carefully. In this installment of Standout Players, we take a look at the best players from the Bronx A Central Division.
Damir Brooks | Kipp
Damir Brooks has been a master of getting to the rim all season. Brooks(14.7ppg, 5.4rpg, 0.7apg) would usually get the ball, and following an extreme speed outburst, he could be found at the rim. His high-flying dunks and crafty layups would both captivate the opponent and make him impossible to guard. Brooks is gifted with an above-average ability of speed, which he uses to consistently break up offenses and take the fastbreak the other way.
Mujahid di Yacoubou | Grace Dodge
Mujahid di Yacoubou has been an electrifying point guard out of Grace Dodge, but don’t let his position label fool you. di Yacoubou(24.5ppg, 12.3rpg, 5.2apg) has electrified others with his speed and left defenders paralyzed with his handles while setting up his teammates with crafty passes, but has also opened up the defense to penetrate inside, creating almost 120 free throw attempts on the season. di Yacoubou has also rebounded everywhere, from putting in his own misses to taking defensive boards and bringing them to the house. di Yacoubou has amazed in his senior season, and should be getting a Division I call soon.
Dajon Jennings | Taft
Jennings, the senior guard from Taft, has shown scoring from anywhere all season. The guard Jennings(19.8ppg, 5.9rpg, 3.5apg) can both take control of the game and facilitate his offense with elite playmaking, while becoming a secondary option who can create his own shot seemingly out of thin air. Jennings is also a very good defender who can use his opponent’s speed against him, forcing key turnovers in key moments.
Mohamed Kante | Bronx United
Mohamed Kante didn’t have amazing numbers last season, but it’s his age that stands out. Only a sophomore, Kante has shown a sky-high ceiling and has already led his team through nail-biting wins. Kante(11.2ppg, 1.9rpg, 1.4apg) has shown enormous potential as a scorer, with the ability to create his own shot and shoot of the bounce. Kante also knows how to get to the basket, and it usually ends in two points or a trip to the line.
Beelgin Nieves | Morris
Beelgin Nieves saw a scoring gap in the Morris offense, and he wasted no time in filling it. Nieves scored the bulk of every game, averaging 20.7 points to go along with 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Beelgin led his team both on the stat sheet and emotionally, and when someone needed to take a big shot, Beelgin was there. Beelgin made his impacts on both ends of the floor, often locking down the opposing team’s best player while carrying his own team.
Damian Wright | Morris
Wright, the point guard from Morris has impressed this junior year. Wright has used his handling and speed to fool defenders and to create easy lanes to the basket. When he doesn’t see and easy path to the basket, it’s usually because defenses have overcommitted on him and one of his teammates is left open, which Wright wastes no time to execute the crisp pass for the score. Wright’s only a junior, so he still has his big year of development coming up.
Jahmeir Sutton | Taft
Jahmeir Sutton contains specialties that colleges can never seem to get enough of– size and shooting. The faceup four has shown the ability to guard a team’s biggest players and largest bodies, and still pull down boards. On the offensive boards, Sutton can both be a force in the paint while also being able to spread the floor and give guards lanes to shoot while being a knockdown shooter in the corner.
