The First Team selections were done last week and now it is time to take a look at the five special players who were named Second Team All-State in New Jersey.
Jonathan Kuminga Jonathan Kuminga 6'8" | SF Patrick School | 2020 #1 Nation NJ (2021) | The Patrick School
This was the biggest story of the offseason. Kuminga is the top ranked player in ESPN’s Class of 2021 rankings. He transferred from Our Savior New American (NY) and joined one of the top programs in New Jersey. Kuminga was sidelined early on with an ankle issue but he returned to action and showed why he is a top prospect. Kuminga averaged 16.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. He is an incredible athlete who can score at will but what makes Kuminga special is his unselfish play on the court. He finished with seven assists in the Union County Tournament final against Roselle Catholic. Kuminga will be must watch during his senior season and he will be under national spotlight as he starts to make his college decision.
Cliff Omoruyi Cliff Omoruyi 6'11" | C Roselle Catholic | 2020 #56 Nation NJ (2020) | Roselle Catholic
It has been said many times that Omoruyi was the most dominant player in the state this season and that rings true. The Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey averaged 14.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 blocks per game this season. Omoruyi blocked 10 or more shots two games in a row during the Non-Public B North state tournament. One of those performances came in the Lions’ championship game victory over The Patrick School. Omoruyi announced recently that he will attend Rutgers. This is a huge get for the Scarlet Knights as they add their most coveted prospect since 2009. Omoruyi will add size, skill, and toughness to Rutgers.
Trey Patterson Trey Patterson 6'7" | SF Rutgers Prep | 2021 State #36 Nation NJ (2021) | Rutgers Prep
Patterson emerged as one of the top players in the state this season. He scored his 1,000th point early on and has another season left. Patterson has the ability to fill up a stat sheet in many ways. He notched 19 double-doubles this season while averaging 19.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Rutgers Prep lost just two games this season and won the Somerset County Tournament for the first time in nearly 40 years. Patterson is a special player and will be one of the most sought after recruits next season.
Ben Roy Ben Roy 6'2" | PG Manasquan | 2022 State #218 Nation NJ (2022) | Manasquan
It was obvious that Roy was a special talent last season, but his rise to the top has been quick. Roy was named Shore Conference Player of the Year after scoring 18.1 points per game. Manasquan finished the season with just one loss led by Roy who ran the offense to perfection. They were the clear-cut best team in the Shore and picked up a conference tournament title along with a state sectional crown. Roy has picked up offers from Monmouth and others, and they will continue to pour in as the sophomore becomes an upperclassman.
DJ Wagner (2023) | Camden
We have the next star in New Jersey. Wagner is the son of former New Jersey high school great Dajuan Wagner and grandson of Milt Wagner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Wagner certainly kept the family tradition of dominance during his freshman season. Wagner led Camden with 18.5 points per game. They were the No. 1 team in the state this season. Wagner led Camden to the South Jersey Group 2 state title. This was part of a 25-game win streak to end the season. Wagner’s name will be heard a lot over the next three years.
