A five spot jump isn’t a huge leap, but it is when you’re moving into the top spot, like DeVries is. The son of Drake head coach Darian DeVries put together a sensational junior year, showcasing himself as one of the top shot makers we’ve seen in our time at Prep Hoops Iowa. The 6-7 wing routinely hit tough, contested shots, and made it look easy. He’s a talented playmaker with the ball in his hands, a gifted shot maker, and has the size and length to be a versatile defender at the next level as well. He’ll be an excellent player at Drake for his dad, should be choose to go that route. Creighton, where DeVries was a long-time assistant coach, is also said to be in the running. He averaged 21.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists with 56-48-79 shooting splits to help overtake teammate Payton Sandfort Payton Sandfort 6'7" | SF Waukee | 2021 State #138 Nation IA at the top of the 2021 rankings.
Caleb Schlaak Caleb Schlaak 6'7" | SF Kennedy | 2021 State IA | SF | Kennedy | 18 to 6
A 6-7 combo forward with the ability to score inside and out, Schlaak has a really strong face-up game and great footwork and touch on the block. He has good size and length, and as he continues to add strength, he will be a bully in the paint. His future will probably be out on the perimeter, and he’ll need to continue to add some consistency to his jumper and improve his ball handling, but there are a lot of tools here.
Landon Wolf Landon Wolf 6'5" | CG Cedar Falls | 2021 State IA | SG | Cedar Falls | 36 to 7
The 6-5 wing has a similar build to older brother Logan Wolf, with incredible length and great size for his position. Landon is a knockdown shooter, both off the dribble and the catch, who shot 44% from behind the arc while leading the Tigers in scoring. He contributes across the board, and as his ball handling continues to tighten up, he’ll turn into a dynamic all-around scoring threat.
Joe Knutson Joe Knutson 6'8" | PF Cedar Falls | 2021 State IA | PF | Cedar Falls | 42 to 19
A big, physical forward with improving explosiveness and athleticism, Knutson finishes above the rim, rebounds the ball well and can make an impact on the defensive end of the floor. He was a role player on a loaded Cedar Falls roster, but has the frame and a developing skill set that will make him an intriguing prospect at the next level. He holds an offer from Division II Truman State.
Trae Swartz Trae Swartz 6'4" | SF Ottumwa | 2021 State IA | SF | Ottumwa | 43 to 21
Swartz is a big, physical wing who can fill it up from all three levels. The release on his jumper needs to get a little quicker, but he’s got a smooth stroke and extended range, shooting 47.7% from the arc as a junior. He likes to attack the rim and post up smaller defenders on the block, using his strength and physicality to power through them.
Luke Rankin Luke Rankin 5'10" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2021 State IA | PG | Dallas Center-Grimes | 61 to 24
A talented lefty guard with a great feel for the game, Rankin was among the state leaders in assists this year. He sees the floor incredibly well, gets his teammates involved, and is a capable scorer with the ability to do so from all three levels. He’s a quick guard with great hands who swiped 73 steals as well as a junior.
Ty Walker Ty Walker 5'11" | PG Valley | 2021 State IA | PG | Valley | 46 to 25
Walker transferred from Roosevelt before the start of his junior season, and it took him a little while to get acclimated with his new team, but he really came on strong near the end of the year. He’s a solid perimeter shooter with a quick release off the catch, but he’s at his best when he’s using his quickness to get to the rim, where he’s a creative finisher. He handles and passes it well, and is a solid athlete with good lateral movement on the defensive end of the floor.
Diondre Taylor Diondre Taylor 5'10" | PG North | 2021 State IA | PG | Des Moines North | 55 to 30
A cat quick guard with a scoring instinct, Taylor is small but supremely fast and is a creative finisher around the rim. He has the lateral quickness to be a pest on the defensive end as well. He needs to improve his jumper and his decision making, as he committed too many turnovers as a junior, but he has the tools to be a really nice player.
Wyatt Heston Wyatt Heston 6'7" | SF Waukee | 2021 State IA | SF | Waukee | 48 to 31
Heston gets overshadowed by his talented classmates DeVries and Sandfort, but he’s a knockdown shooter who is also a great defender. At 6-7, he has great size and length, and he shot 50% from behind the arc as a junior. He’s a prototypical 3-and-D wing at the next level.
Max Roquet Max Roquet 6'6" | C Johnston | 2021 State IA | C | Johnston | 71 to 35
The 6-6 big man makes a major jump up the rankings, moving into the top 35 following a strong and efficient junior year. He has the ability to score inside at a highly efficient clip, using either hand with good touch around the bucket, and he’s shown the ability to occasionally step out and knock down a jumper. He rebounds at a high level on both ends of the floor.
