Unfortunately, we only did five players for three teams, leaving plenty of guys who deserve the recognition out and even “snubbing” a few guys because of the limited space. Not to worry however, as we’ve come up with a list of honorable mentions (yes, we know there are some that got snubbed here too). Below, you’ll find 10 senior bigs that were heavily considered for the All State team.
Logan Washington Logan Washington 6'6" | PF Life Christian | 2020 State VA | 6’6” PF | Life Christian Academy
LCA had a number of talented kids yet again as they went back-to-back with another state championship, and Washington is the one many don’t talk about but plays one of the biggest roles for them. On a team full of guards and wings he held the paint down every day swatting shots and dominating the glass, finishing plays above the rim and showing off his athleticism and motor. He was one of the best two way bigs in the state this year.
Ismael Plet Ismael Plet 6'7" | PF VES | 2020 State VA | 6’7” PF | Virginia Episcopal School
Plet was one of just a few seniors on a young VES team that had its ups and downs this year but he was probably one of their most consistent players all year. The 6’7” forward played with a great motor and used his strength and athleticism to dominate in the paint, averaging close to a double-double this year. He was named to the second team VISAA D2 All State team and remains as one of the best available players in the state.
Karl Chavis Karl Chavis 6'5" | PF Oscar Smith | 2020 State VA | 6’6” PF | Oscar Smith
Chavis missed some of the season with some injury problems but when he was on the floor he made them a totally different team. The 6’6” forward brought his team athleticism, a high motor and versatility on both ends as a guy who could play in the post and on the perimeter. He wasted no time when coming back from the injury and was productive on both ends of the floor.
Gill Williamson Gill Williamson 6'8" | PF St. Christopher's | 2020 State VA | 6’8” PF | St. Chris
Williamson was a guy we highly considered because his level of improvement over the past few years is possibly the best of any big on this list. The St. Chris forward finally grew into his body and he turned into an athletic freak with good touch and a two way impact guy. He was named to the All Prep League First Team.
Elijah Roye | 6’7” PF | Carmel School
Roye was snubbed by the VISAA on the All State teams but he was huge in leading Carmel School to the final four and played great down the stretch for them. They had wings that could score so he wasn’t the go-to guy but he made plays in the paint on both ends of the floor and used his size to bully other guys in the paint. He was steady all season and showed flashes of dominance at times.
Lance Johnson Lance Johnson 6'5" | PF Freedom South-Riding | 2020 State VA | 6’4” PF | Freedom South Riding
Johnson has had quite the last two seasons as he’s racked up First Team All District and All Region accolades while leading Freedom to the state tournament two years ago and one game away from it this year. The 6’5” senior is a hard worker on both ends of the floor, he dominates the paint in a number of ways and has soft touch as well. He was super productive throughout the year and one of the best in Northern VA.
Tristan How Tristan How 6'3" | PF Norfolk Collegiate | 2021 VA | 6’6” PF | Norfolk Collegiate
How was a breakout guy and a huge reason that Norfolk Collegiate was able to make it to the state championship game before falling to a stacked Blue Ridge team. The 6’6” forward really came into his own as he showed the ability to play above the rim, shoot it and make shots from multiple levels and even put it on the deck and create shots at his size. He finished the season as a Second Team All VISAA selection.
Parker Huffman Parker Huffman 6'8" | PF Cave Spring | 2020 State VA | 6’8” PF | Cave Spring
Huffman was the senior leader for the state champion Cave Spring this year and was one of the best players in all of Roanoke throughout the year. The 6’8” big was capable of putting up big numbers offensively but was also unselfish and let his teammates get going as well, but when they needed a bucket he was the guy. His mismatch ability as an inside-out guy is what made them very tough to matchup with all year.
Calvin Thomas Calvin Thomas 6'5" | PF Tallwood | 2020 State VA | 6’7” PF | Oscar Smith
While Chavis (mentioned above) was battling through injuries this year, Thomas held it down in the middle for a Smith team that saw plenty of success this year. The 6’7” bully of a post caught the attention of multiple division two schools with his ability to produce on both ends and his surprising quickness, and he did all the dirty work that his team needed him to do throughout the season.
Thomas Mangrum Thomas Mangrum 6'5" | PF Western Albemarle | 2020 State VA | 6’5” PF | Western Albemarle
The Class 3 Region C Player of the Year had a terrific career at Western Albemarle with multiple state tournament appearances and eclipsing the 1,000 point mark. This season he was part of a wild ride as they won the last two games of the regional playoffs with a buzzer beater and the first game of the state playoffs with one as well. Mangrum did it all for his team being a mismatch guy and also dominating in the paint, averaging 20.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, finishing with the single season scoring title and as the school’s second all time leading scorer.
