As we adjust to this new calendar as it pertains to basketball action, the content here at Prep Hoops will not stop. It’s looking that the 2019-20 season has come to an abrupt end and with that being said, we begin our reflection posts on what we’ve learned over the past six months. For this week’s roundtable, the Prep Hoops Maryland gang looks at questions pertaining to the prospects who just missed being voted to an All-State team for the class of 2020, 2021 prospects who are primed for a big summer and freshman from this past season who we think will take a big step in development this summer.
1. With All-State teams being announced, who was a player in your opinion that just missed being included?
Giacubeno: Tremaine ChesleyTremaineChesley
6'3" | CG St. Charles | 2020StateMD
from St. Charles was a debated prospect throughout the assembling of the 2020 All-Senior teams. The 6-foot-4 guard emerged as an elite defender who could also make an impact on the offense end and provide the toughness the Spartans needed to sport a 26-1 overall record.
Ayalew: There were plenty of players omitted who you could argue for, but I personally thought it was difficult to leave Cam TweedyCamTweedy
6'6" | PF Olympus Prep | 2021StateNJ off the list. Tweedy has been playing at a high-level for quite some time now and probably deserves recognition, but it was tough to make a strong case for him based on how his team performed.
Wilson: For me I have to go with Tremaine ChesleyTremaineChesley
6'3" | CG St. Charles | 2020StateMD
. Chesley played a huge part in the success of St. Charles this year as they advanced to the Maryland State final four. Chesley is regarded as one of the best on ball defenders in the DMV and can guard multiple positions which really helped St. Charles this year. He also was able to score the ball a lot for St. Charles as his jump shot improved throughout the year.
2. Give a name in the class of 2021 who could surprise people by this time next season?
Giacubeno: Barry EvansBarryEvans
6'7" | SF Poly | 2021StateMD
is a name I have my eye on. After a productive season in Howard County at Oakland Mills, there are rumors that Evans could be on the market as a potential transfer. Whether or not he decides to do so, the 6-foot-7 wing showcased his elite length to go with sneaky athleticism on his attacks to the rim. He is also capable of knocking down shots from deep. Wherever Evans ends up, he’ll be on my list to watch closely next season to see if his development continues to trend in the right direction.
Ayalew: It’s gotta be Barry EvansBarryEvans
6'7" | SF Poly | 2021StateMD
from Oakland Mills. He’s got an intriguing physical profile, listed at about 6-foot-6 on the wing with a solid base skill set to build from. This summer will be huge for his stock and by this time next year we could be talking about him as someone who could be making one of those All-State teams.
Wilson: I have talked about him a lot this year and that’s going to continue with Kino Lilly. Landon is coming off a down year and they will heavily rely on Lilly next year especially with the graduation of Canin ReynoldsCaninReynolds
5'6" | PG Landon | 2020StateMD
. Lilly is regarded as one of the top shot makers in the DMV. Lilly could be one of the top scorers in the DMV next year as he will have the ultimate green light for Landon.
3. Who in the 2023 class has the potential to make the biggest leap this summer?
Giacubeno: There was no shortage of talent in this year’s freshman class. Throughout the area, we saw plenty of first-year players make an impact on their respective teams. For my answer I’m choosing Mike Williams from Calvert Hall. Williams was one of the most productive freshmen in the area as he shouldered a heavy load for an extremely young team. Experience is the best teacher and I think Williams realized exactly what he needs to improve on going forward. He’s equipped with impressive athleticism, but playing with the ball in his hands for the majority of this year made him more of an overall threat offensively. As he continues to polish his play making ability off the bounce, he could be a name we talk about often for the next few years.
Ayalew: I think Jacoi Hutchinson could be in for a huge summer. Hutchinson logged plenty of meaningful minutes during his impressive freshman year and will likely be an indispensable player for his AAU team. I expect him to be a consistent producer throughout the summer.
Wilson: I think Bryson Wilson is a guy that has a really good future in front of him. Wilson is already 6’5 with some solid muscle on him and certainly does not look like a freshman. I have seen him be a beast inside and I expect his productivity to pick up even more next year. I think this time next year we could be talking about him being one of the top 2023 prospects in the area.
