The 2020 tournament has proven to be no different, with two of North Jerseys best heading towards a collision course this Friday. The star-studded Bergen Catholic Crusaders will be making yet another Finals’ appearance against a highly competitive St. Joseph (mont) team. Who has the edge? We’ll have to delve deeper into each team’s strengths to determine that.
Will Bergen Catholic’s Stars Rise to the Occasion?
This years final won’t be short of stars on both sides of the basketball. Heading into the 2019-2020 campaign, Bergen Catholic was expected to be here, and that is in large part due to a deep roster of players capable of dominating a game at any moment. When it comes to Bergen Catholic, you can pretty much pick your poison when figuring out who to game plan against.
Senior Matt Zona has remained one of the best big men in the state for his ability to score and rebound the ball among the best. The standout didn’t have his best showing in the Semifinals, only accumulating 6 points and 10 rebounds, however, that speaks to the Crusader’s depth.
The real answer to defeating Bergen Catholic will be the ability for the Green Knights to slow down the dynamic Sophomore duo of Will Richardson and Julian Brown. Richardson and Brown have proven to be such an incredible one-two punch, it’s scary to imagine what they’ll be able to do as upperclassmen. Combining for over 700 points on the season, and both having the ability to create and make shots off the dribble, it will be tough to slow this tandem down.
Can St. Joseph Remain a Multi-Threat Offense?
St. Joseph (mont) has been one of the better teams in North Jersey this season in large part due to their incredible depth on the offensive side of the basketball. On a team filled with experienced upperclassmen, the Green Knights have six players who have scored over 100 points for the season. Also, the senior duo of Nazir Williams and Dyree Rodgers continues to impress daily. Should the Green Knights win the Bergen County Jamboree, a lot will depend on Williams’s ability to remain strong. Already amassing over 280 points on the season, Williams is coming off of one of his best games. In a convincing 73-64 over Don Bosco in the semifinals, Williams proved to be the best player on the court, posting 26 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
