Both Pella Christian and Dallas Center-Grimes struggled on the offensive end in the Little Hawkeye Conference matchup on Friday. The Mustangs were able to come away with the victory, 50-48, over the Eagles in overtime.
Sophomore guard Cole Glasgow won the game on a buzzer-beater layup as time expired in overtime to give DCG its 13th win of the season. Glasgow finished with 15 points on the night.
Pella Christian is now 9-9 on the season and 4-8 in conference play, but will be a tough out in Class 2A this March.
Who stood out from Friday night’s contest? Let’s take a look.
CG Cole Glasgow (DCG, 2022)
This was my first time watching Glasgow live, and I came away very impressed. It wasn’t his best shooting night, but he does a lot of other things well on the floor. Glasgow is a three-level scorer with great athleticism. He makes tough finishes around the rim look easy, and can blow past his defender with a quick first step. Easy to see why a slew of mid-major programs are intrigued. His defense was also stood out in the win. He slides his feet well and is smart about using his hands.
PG Luke Rankin (DCG, 2021)
Rankin is the epitome of a coach’s kid. He has a great feel for the game, and knows when to make the right play or pass with the ball in his hands. He’s tough, gritty, and has an attitude that is fun to watch. His shot wasn’t falling, but he makes up for it with his playmaking ability and smart decision making. His floater adds another element to his game. One of my favorite point guards in the state. He’s the engine that’s going to help DCG go far in March. NAIA/D3 schools should be involved here.
C Josh Van Grop (PC, 2020)
Listed at 6-foot-9, Van Grop was the biggest player on the floor on Friday, and used his size to his advantage. DCG had a tough time covering him downlow, especially when he got post position. Van Grop’s footwork is also impressive, and he has good touch around the basket. Double-double machine. He finished with 16 points on the night.
PG Jack Vermeer (PC, 2020)
Vermeer was quiet for most of the game in the scoring department, but he had some good flashes. Vermeer is a strong, heady guard who can play point guard or on the win. He’s a strong defender that made life tough for Rankin. Also a fan of his passing ability. Will be the key to helping Pella Christian go far in Class 2A.
