Instead, the shot fell short and Greeneview defended their home court with a 58-56 win against visiting Cedarville. Cross had a strong performance for Cedarville and helped carry the scoring on his back along with Trent Koning. Gabe Caudill impressed on his final home game as a Ram with a 20+ point performance. The win gives Greeneview a one game lead in the OHC South and has all but secured a title for them. In this piece, I discuss the 5 players that impressed me most in this game as many upperclassmen showed what they can do.
Isaiah Ramey (2021)- Ramey started off a bit slow in this one, missing two early 3PT attempts,
however he found his groove come second half. Although built more like a guard, he showed a physicality by being willing to post up in the paint. His seal offs were strong and was able to show his hands when calling for the ball. Defensively, his length was disruptive as he got deflections on several perimeter passes and overall made things difficult for Greeneview. While he played as the top guy in Cedarville’s 3-2 zone, the Rams struggled to get open shots off.
Trent Koning (2021)- I came in half expecting to see Koning as a distributing guard as his teammate Colby Cross seemed to be the primary scorer at times for Cedarville. Boy was I wrong. Koning is a lengthy guard, but offensively was fantastic. He demonstrated a very good shooting touch, knocking down 5 3’s during the game. He was knocking down shots not just off the dribble, but in catch-and-shoot situations as well. I especially was impressed with how quickly he got his feet set and his ability to create separation off the dribble. He definitely compliments Cross in the backcourt and could be a next level guard if he bulks up a bit.
Colby Cross (2020)- Whether you’re a Cedarville or Greeneview fan, Cross is a name you’ve probably heard before tonight and was arguably the most well-known player on the court.
The Cedarville University commit struggled to get shots off early on as his midrange and 3PT shot were not falling consistently. He however impressed by getting in the paint with his explosive dribble drive and was scoring in traffic against a taller Rams defense. Cross has a lot of confidence in his shot and nearly knocked down the game winner from the wing at the end of the game. Defensively he’s such a glue guy as he defended on the ball with speed and agility.
Rhett Burtch (2021)- One of Dayton’s better stock risers in 2020, Burtch definitely showed me why he’s turning heads not just in the OHC but in all of Dayton. Physically he is such a strong guard. Bulky and knows how to use his body on both ends of the floor. He found ways to score on the perimeter as well as with his jumpshot. I was impressed with how easy it was to transition from right to left when attacking off the dribble drive. It seemed that he would get in the paint with ease. His shooting touch was incredible as well as he got plenty of shots off with tough defense in his face. Another strong showing this Spring during AAU may be enough to attract D3 schools to watch Burtch play.
Gabe Caudill (2020)- Caudill came to play on his senior night and had arguably one of the biggest games of the season go Greeneview’s way because of his contributions. Overall his offensive game is very nice. He plays with a certain physicality that no other guys seemed to have tonight. He always seemed to be a step ahead on both ends of the floor and especially on the offensive end, outworked his opponent time and time again. He’s an unselfish player as well as I watched him on a 2-on-1 fast break quickly get the ball up the floor to an open teammate. He was definitely the best performer on the day and it came as no surprise that he plans to attend Wilmington College to play basketball next season.
