The match between these two teams was expected to be a good one, and it did not disappoint. Fairview, 7th ranked team in 5A according to CHSAANow, may have been able to outlast Monarch 46 to 40, but it was no easy accomplishment for the Knights. The Coyotes put up a serious fight with their student section proving that home-court advantage can be very effective. With a game that involved four Prep Hoops ranked players, it came as no surprise that the game was hard-fought to the very end. Here is a look at some of the takeaways from this match:

Sam Carlson – 2021 – 6’2” Guard - Monarch

Even though his team was unable to come away with the win, Sam was the best player on the court in this game. He finished the contest with a game-high of 18 points, 12 of which came from beyond the perimeter. He had multiple blocks and rebounds, showing that his talent has very little limits. Sam Carlson was hands down, the standout player of the night.

Greysen Carter – 2021 – 6’4” Forward - Fairview

Prep Hoops has Greysen ranked 12th among the state’s junior players. He finished with a team-high of 14 points. His performance in the post was absolutely outstanding. Greysen was a difference-maker for the Knights with his rebounding skills and his ability to succeed on put backs.

Jalen Page – 2020 – 6’5” Forward - Fairview

Ranked 19th in the state for his class by Prep Hoops, Jalen played a great game. He finished the night with 10 points, but he made sure his presence was known on defense. Not only was he able to secure his fair share of rebounds, but he was also able to keep his man locked down on defense. Jalen’s scoring ability mixed with his standout defensive skill set makes him a legitimate next-level prospect.

Greg Gerhardt – 2021 – 6’10" Center - Monarch

Greg is ranked 22nd amongst the seniors in the state. His height makes him stand out no matter what, and his playing ability makes him exciting to watch. His only score of the night came in the second quarter with a putback dunk that helped the Coyotes take a halftime lead. He had his work cut out for him in the paint but was able to hold his own defensively. In addition to his dunk, Greg had a few blocks that helped to establish his defensive dominance.

Joey Covington – 2020 – 6’0” Guard – Monarch

Joey turned on the heat in the last half of the game, especially in the fourth quarter. He finished the contest with eight points, six of which came in the fourth. His contribution in the fourth quarter has a lot to do with why the game was as close as it was. Joey’s high-paced motor mixed with his tenacity enabled him to push the needle and keep his opponents on their toes, especially as a perimeter defender.

TJ Williams – 2021 – 6’0” Guard – Fairview

When this young man steps onto the court, he is in full go mode. His presence brought an energy that was unable to be matched by anyone in the building, including Monarch’s unwavering student section. TJ’s ability to pull up without slowing down is extremely impressive. He finished the game with 11 points, nine of which came in the final quarter from various distances. Add a willingness to fight for rebounds with his non-stop motor, and the result is a win for the Knights.

Ethan Henderson – 2020 - 6’5” Forward - Monarch

Ethan is the 96th ranked senior in the state according to Prep Hoops. The strength that he brings to the low post is serious. He plays with a competitive attitude that proves effective as a defender. Ethan's tenacity on defense at the rim played a major role in keeping the game within reach.

--

Fairview was able to shut down both of Monarch’s Prep Hoops ranked players on offense, holding the pair to a combined four points in the game. The most important battles in this game were fought in the post for both teams, with only one player having consistent success from beyond the perimeter. Fairview (13-3, 5-0) may have won the contest, but Monarch (8-6, 2-3) proved that they can make for tough competition when matched up against some of the best that the state has to offer.
