Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Blake Wesley – 6’5 2021 SG – South Bend Riley: Wesley is one of the best SGs in the state, but has not been featured enough because his team has not played the best season. This top 2021 prospect has a really long body that allows him to shoot over the defender at ease. He shoots extremely well from distance and plays with an aggressive nature. South Bend Riley takes on Elkhart Central on Friday, and if you are in the area, go and check out this fantastic prospect.
Owen Dease – 6’6 2021 SF – Evansville Reitz: I am a big fan of Dease’s shooting ability. His catch-and-shoot skill is one of the best in the state and it makes it tough for defenders to settle in and defend. He had 20 points last week against Bloomington North and a lot of them came from behind the arc. With a tremendous set of shooting skills, this SF is in the top tier of shooters in Indiana. Dease and Reitz head to Bedford to take on the Stars this Friday.
Tayshawn Comer – 5’11 2022 PG – Cathedral: Comer is coming off a great weekend of dropping 29 points in Cathedral’s win over Avon last Friday. He is a tough-nosed guard who likes to get into the lane and mix it up with the bigs down low. He may not have the best jumper yet, but he can get buckets. Maybe the best defender in his class, Comer is one of the more exciting prospects in the 2022. Comer and Cathedral take on Indianapolis Roncalli on Friday.
3 Teams
Christian Academy (1A): The Warriors, even though having lost more games than what they have this season, are still a very solid group. They are a very experienced group with seniors Bailey Conrad, Nick Conrad, and T.J. Proctor being the core of their team. I would say they have a pretty tough schedule but they have been able to ink out some wins. They go on the road to take on Jeffersonville this Saturday and it will be an extremely tough test. Look for them to give the Red Devils a fight.
Danville (3A): The Warriors have taken care of business this year having won 9 games and with only one loss against a solid Plainfield team. They have an intriguing matchup this Tuesday facing an Avon team that has had an up-and-down year. Expect prospects Dillon Ware and Sam Comer to each have a monster week. This squad is one of the best in 3A and look for them to continue that trend.
Indian Creek (3A): Ever since losing to Franklin in week 1, the Braves have been undefeated having beat teams like Edgewood, Martinsville, and Franklin County. The thing is about this team is that they do not have an elite prospect. They just play great team ball. They go on the road to face Brown County on Saturday night and I expect them to keep that undefeated streak alive.
3 Matchups
Perry Central (2A) at Forest Park (2A) – Jan 11, 8 pm: Perry Central could potentially be Forest Park’s toughest challenge yet this year with only Paoli and Christian Academy being the others. The Rangers have only lost one game while the Commodores have lost 3 close ones. There will not necessarily be amazing prospects in this contest, but it is going to be a hard-fought matchup. Forest Park’s team is built just a little bit better so I give them the edge.
North Judson (2A) at Kouts (1A) – Jan 10, 7 pm: Kouts is one of the few remaining unbeaten teams in 2A and is arguably the best. There schedule has been pretty easy so it is good to see that they are winning the games they should. North Judson on the other hand is 4-4 this year but has played solid for the most part. The reason this game is on the “games to watch” is because this is going to be Kouts toughest game yet. The Bluejays are going to be looking to snag the upset.
Warren Central (4A) at Lawrence Central (4A) – Jan 10, 7:30 pm: This is without-a-doubt the game to watch this week. You have a surprising, uneaten team in Warren Central going up against an absolutely dominate Lawrence Central squad. This game is going to be packed-full of elite players like Warren Central’s Cortland Jackson, Malik Stanley, Sean Black and Lawrence Central’s D’Andre Davis and Nijel Pack. The “Battle of the Centrals” is going to be decided by only a few points I feel. In the end, expect Lawrence Central to just have too much for Warren to handle, thus giving the Warriors their first loss.
