Calvary Day School jumps out to a big first-half lead
It looked like it would be an easy victory for Calvary Day School and company, as they jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter 18-10. At halftime, they led 37-24 while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and were led by 2022 guard James Wilkins III‘s 10 points and four assists. 2021 guard Owen Gulledge had nine points on 4-of-7 shooting as well.
Roanoke Catholic battles until the end
The Roanoke Catholic Celtics battled back in the second half against Calvary Day School, outscoring them 45-34 in the third and fourth quarters. 2023 guard Stark Jones proved to be the biggest spark, scoring 10 points including two big 3-pointers all in the second half. 2022 guard Jack Faulkner also put up eight points to finish the game with 17 points and four made 3-pointers. They’re a young group but as they learn to compete for four quarters, they’ll be a team to watch in the New River Valley.
Starting 5 gets it done for Calvary Day
In the end, the Cougars got a 71-69 victory thanks to a floater from Wilkins as time expired. He finished with 17 points and seven assists despite a lackluster fourth quarter. He’ll be a guard to watch alongside Gulledge who finished with 11 points. 2021 guard Zach Gibson is also one to watch. He had eight points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two steals in the victory.
In the frontcourt, Javon Floyd (2021) and C.J. McLenahan (2022) finished in double figures. Floyd posted 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. McLenahan put up 11 points, three rebounds and a block. They’re a young core group that’s learning to mesh when things get tight.
Calvary Day gets a big second half from Floyd
The Celtics turned up the pressure up a bit on the Cougars down the stretch and it worked to an extent, but by game’s end, four of the five starters for Calvary Day School finished scoring in double-figures. Javon Floyd was one of those players after putting up 10 of his 14 points in the second half. He also posted two blocks. As he learns to become an impact player in the paint, he’ll be one to watch for the Cougars in the Triad area.
Good crop of young talent at Roanoke Catholic
Roanoke Catholic and head coach Shawn Good have a nice crop of talent led by 2021 forward Dillon Porter and 2022 guard Jack Faulkner. Porter put up 10 points, five rebounds and four assists in 20 minutes of action. At 6-foot-6, Porter has the ability to operate all over the floor and make plays out the post. Faulkner led the way in scoring with 17 points to go along with five assists and two steals. He’s fearless on both ends and showed flashes as a sharpshooter.
