Continue ReadingIn one of the more lopsided matchups of the first round of the WOBM Christmas Classic, No. 3 Wall faced No. 14 Toms River South. It was a 59-29 blowout win for Wall.
Led by their defense, Wall built a 22 point lead heading into halftime by just allowing eight points over the first two quarters. Patrick Lacey led Wall with 10 points on 4-6 from the field. They will move on to face No. 6 Marlboro in round two of the tournament. Here are some things we learned from this one sided game.
Defense Proved to be Wall’s Strength
It was obvious from the opening tip that Toms River North would struggle to score points in this game. After two minutes of play, the score was 2-2. Both teams played a slow paced game but Wall was defensively sound throughout. The Crimson Knights were in perfect position throughout the game on the defensive end. They will play a lot of low scoring games this season and it started today as they allowed just 29 points to Toms River South.
The Crimson Knights are a Deep Team
Lacey led the way with 10 points but he was the only player to score in double-figures and one of 10 players to score a point in the game. Wall emptied the bench towards the end when the game was out of hand but before that, they went nine deep on their bench.
Head coach Colleen Wisher clearly has a vision for this team. They are full of similar players with similar skills that all play defense with great intensity. Wall is going to be a tough team in the Shore Conference because of their relentless nature on the floor.
Foul Shooting Has Not Gone Away
While it did not matter in this game, foul shooting could be a huge way to decide a game down the stretch. It was clear that both Wall and Toms River South focus on their production from the charity stripe.
Wall finished 14-17 from the free throw line while Toms River South was 7-9. This is incredible production from the line where players have gone away from practicing. In big games, especially for Wall, free throw shooting will be a factor and having it on their side will be huge.
