Let’s take a moment to take a quick trip back to a few events on the east side of the state to look at who won championships and who took home Tournament MVP honors.
The Lumberton Pirates finally were able to get the deal done after finishing in 2nd place the last few years with a championship win over Fairmont HS. Lumberton HS Senior Guard Jordan McNeil would take home MVP honors and come close to putting together a triple double as his team got the championship win. McNeil is a player that D2 programs have been watching closely and has put together some big time performances over the season.
If you didn’t know about him already, he made a nice introduction for himself this weekend as Terry Sanford Sophomore Wing Davis Molnar took home MVP honors in the Ike Walker Sr. bracket. Molnar is a legit 6’7 with a nice overall skillset and plenty of upside, he doesn’t make unnecessary movements when shooting and doesn’t mind battling inside for boards. 25 Points was his final point total for the Championship game but he also did a nice job rebounding the ball, pulling down 10 boards.
The Westover HS team has gotten outstanding performances from multiple players throughout the season so far and Senior Guard Manas Drummond stepped up for them in the Championship game while being named Tourney MVP. Drummond is a player that can score the ball due to how aggressive he is but also has a nice IQ for the game and doesn’t mind getting other players involved.
The Greenfield School held their yearly Christmas Tournament and took home the Championship over Grace Christian of Raleigh. Senior Guard Collin Guilford was named Tournament MVP and kept his stellar play as he has gotten off to a nice start for the squad this season. Greenfield will need him to continue to high level of play as well as the rest of their outstanding seniors if they want to repeat as state champs.
Washington County got the win over Washington HS in their Christmas Tournament Saturday night and one of the main reasons why was WCHS Senior Guard Deandre Downing. He put together a monster performance with 26 points and 15 rebounds on the night which is impressive stats, but what we really like is the fact that he’s doing this at 6’7 playing the Guard spot. College programs are showing interest and if he keeps progressing he could himself pick up offers sooner than later.
Pinecrest HS Junior Guard Bradlee Haskell continued his stellar level of play and took home the MVP Award in their annual Christmas tournament. Haskell is a player that we have watched closely over the years and now D1 programs are beginning to do so as well. He can score and distribute at a high level as well as defend other quick guards.
