Down 30-25 at the break, Durant lost the foul battle in a big way in the third quarter and had its top piece foul out early in the fourth quarter. The home side Sharks pushed away for a 66-45 victory.
Here is a look at the standout performers.
Jaden Ramos (Riverview)
A true athlete who simply takes over games with his stealing prowess and dunking, 2020 6’3″ forward Jaden Ramos marked 20 points in this one. He was getting the crowd going and his team fed off of it. He is a fun player to watch and someone who works hard at getting in the paint and flying down the floor in transition play.
De’Jare Duhart (Riverview)
The first seven points of the game came from 2020 6’1″ guard De’Jare Duhart. Ending with 20 points to tie Ramos, he was getting open on the break and routinely finishing lay-ins. Duhart had some corner mid-range jumpers and 3’s fall, but it was his ability to get inside and score that stood out. He is a lightning bolt offensively.
Matthew Lentz (Durant)
Half of the points for 2021 6’6″ guard/forward Matthew Lentz came at the free throw line. Finishing with 14 points, Lentz is always noticeable by defenses but his energy and ability make him tough to guard, hence the seven free throws made. He picked up two quick fouls in the third quarter to give him four and fouled out early in the fourth quarter on a shot-blocking attempt. Lentz is a talented shooter who is getting better as an attacker and ballhandler. He should have a steady junior year.
Joshaun Codlyn (Durant)
Outside of one bad take to the rim in the third quarter, there wasn’t much not to like about the game of 2021 6’4″ guard/forward Joshaun Codlyn. He tied the team-best 14 points, filling the void with Lentz on the bench late. Codlyn has good weaving ability and is someone who isn’t afraid to take on contact as an attacker.
Tyler Cauley & Deon Oliver (Riverview)
Finishing with five points each, 2021 6’4″ guard Tyler Cauley and 2020 6’2″ guard Deon Oliver are very crafty ballhandlers. Unselfish and shifty, they both got their teammates going and it paid off. Cauley is a long body who likes to get inside and create. Oliver is a quick-twitch guard who gets past defenders with ease. Both players will help this fast-paced offense all season long.
Luke Ligori (Durant)
The energy that 2021 6’5″ forward Luke Ligori brought was undeniable. He was hustling on the boards, chasing down defenders for some blocks in transition and he had some nice finishes at the rim. Ligori is a very good role player that fares well alongside No. 1 option Lentz. He’s someone Durant will know what it will get out of nightly.
