This year is no different, other than the fact that its talented backcourt features two freshmen who are already making a name for themselves a month into their young high school careers.
Jakhary Towns and Damarie Thompson were the youngest players on the court during Thursday night’s 60-50 win over Wayland Union, yet their play was indicative of seasoned veterans. The freshman duo combined for 41 points on 13-25 shooting, proving they were ready for the big stage. Yes, they still had their fair share of freshman moments, combining for nine turnovers, however, if it weren’t for the efforts of its young backcourt, Godwin Heights would most likely be looking at an 0-5 start to the season.
Jakhary Towns
5’10” Guard, 2023
Jakhary Towns has been impressive in the first month of his high school career, dropping 20 points against one of the areas best teams, Hudsonville and now 24 points tonight. What immediately stands out about Jakhary is how natural the game comes to him. Most freshmen have a tough time adapting to the game speed and rarely make an impact because of it. Jakhary seems to embrace the opportunity given to him and isn’t afraid to get his shot up, early and often.
Jakhary’s main strength is his shooting, which has been a key weapon for Godwin Heights, as they’ve used Jakhary’s scoring bursts to come back or to take control of games in crucial moments. He also has a quick release and range that extends well beyond the three-point line. Although Jakhary’s slender frame doesn’t necessarily make him the most imposing presence, his quickness allows him to take opponents off the dribble and get to the rim. This has been imperative to Godwin Height’s success seeing that whenever the Wolverines need a bucket, Jakhary has typically been the guy they’ve turned to.
Damarie Thompson
5’10” Guard, 2023
Damarie Thompson wasn’t supposed to see varsity action this early in the season, however, a teammate’s illness caused Godwin Heights to call up Damarie from the JV team on Thursday night. In his first varsity game, Damarie provided a much-needed spark for the Wolverines, recording 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists in 24 minutes of action as he hit numerous big shots and handled the ball smoothly in transition, finishing at the rim and creating shot opportunities for his teammates.
It was evident from early on that the Godwin Heights’ offense was more effective with Damarie on the court. In addition to his shooting ability, Damarie sees the floor well and can create offense off the dribble when Godwin’s half-court sets stall out. On the defensive end, Damarie has the lateral quickness to check guards who are taller and more developed than he is.
It’s unknown whether Godwin Heights will elect to keep Damarie up on varsity after his impressive debut, or if they will send him back down to JV to gain as much playing time as possible. However, Damarie’s skillset seems like it will translate to success at the varsity stage at this moment.
