Continue ReadingThe Marlboro Mustangs have been a bit of a surprise in the Shore Conference to begin the season. They have won their first three games and will be playing in the semi-finals of the WOBM Christmas Classic against Toms River North. Marlboro is a young team with a bright future but they will not have to wait thanks to their sensational senior.
Alex Ratner has always been a scoring machine. He showed that during his junior season at Marlboro but he has taken his game to a new level so far in 2019. His season began by leading Marlboro to a statement win over Christian Brothers. Ratner finished with 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Marlboro entered the WOBM Christmas Classic as the No. 6 seed and Ratner has led the way.
In round one against Manchester, Ratner finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. He continued his scalding hot start with a career-high 36 points in the quarterfinals against No. 3 Wall. He did damage in the first half scoring 24 of his team’s 43 points.
What impresses the most about Ratner is his attitude on the floor. He is a fearless player with no conscience when it comes to shooting the ball. It does not matter the size of the opponent or what team Marlboro is playing. Ratner uses his quick release to get shots up over defenders from anywhere on the floor. What he showed against Wall is that he is a microwave. All Ratner needs is one shot to get going.
Marlboro is not a deep team. They played just one off the bench in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs do not need to dig deep into their bench because of the talent in their starting lineup. Sophomores Jack Seidler, Jonathan Spatola, and Jay Ratner have stepped up into big roles and are proving that they are strong options. It all starts with Ratner at the point guard position. Marlboro is a dark-horse team in the Shore Conference this season because of their ability to score the ball. They will be must watch all season long.
