Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Grant Niehaus – 6’2 2020 SF – Washington: The last time Niehaus played he dropped an impressive 36 points in a 69-65 win over Evansville Bosse. This prospect is a sharp-shooting stud and can get buckets. He is an under-the-radar prospect but should be getting more looks as this player can be a great shooting asset to any team he is on. Look for Niehaus and team to continue to role as they face a really good Loogootee team on Friday.
Noah Hedrick – 6’4 2020 SF – Covenant Christian: Hedrick is coming off the best weekend out of any high school player in the state of Indiana. He set records of dropping 48 points and drained 10 3-pointers in the processes of making history. Hedrick is one of my players to watch because I am curious to see if he can keep his hot hand going. I do not expect him to drop another 48 points but I do expect him to keep playing phenomenal when he and team take on Indianapolis Scecina on Saturday.
Tyler Phelps – 6’7 2020 PF – Evansville Mater Dei: Phelps is the type of big man that is pretty much an all-around player that plays great on both sides of the ball. The last time he was on the floor he had a double-double (27 points and 13 rebounds) against North Posey. Phelps has been playing great this season as have the entire Wildcats squad. Watch for Phelps to continue to lead Meter Dei to victories as they face Evansville North on Friday.
3 Teams
Covington (1A): Covington has only lost two games this year and they were competitive in both. This is a really good team that has been playing good ball lately. 2021 prospect Logan Pinkerton has really stepped up this year and has been the focus of the offense. The Trojans play in the Bi County Tournament on Friday and I expect them to take care of business and continue to move up in the rankings.
Fishers (4A): Fishers might be playing the best ball out of any team in the state right now. Undefeated and just collected a tournament win at the Bedford Holiday Tournament this past weekend. Prospects Isaac Farah and Jeffrey Simmons are making a case to be the best frontcourt duo in all of 4A. This team moves the ball and is couched so well. Expect them to take care of Columbus East on Friday before taking on Layfayette Jeff next week.
Norwell (3A): The Knights are arguably the hottest team in all of 3A at the moment. Even though their schedule is not the toughest in the state, they are taking care of business and beating teams they need to beat. Norwell will compete in the Mishawaka Marian Classic on Thursday so that could potentially test this squad. 2020 prospects Will Geiger will be looking to show-out this week and help snag a couple wins.
3 Matchups
Barr-Reeve (1A) vs Linton-Stockton (2A) – Jan 4, 12 pm: This matchup is between the top team in 1A and the top team in 2A. Keegan O’Neill will lead the Vikings to take on Lincoln Hale and the Miners in the first round of the Southridge Tournament this weekend. I would say whoever wins this one will win the entire tourney. Barr-Reeve has been unstoppable so far so it will be a tough task for Linton to accomplish. If Lincoln Hale starts lighting it up, we could see an upset on Saturday.
Blackford (2A) vs Randolph Southern (1A) – Jan 3, 7:30 pm: For being one of the top teams in 2A heading into this past weekend, Blackford had some tough outcomes having gone 0-2 in the tournament at North Daviess. This game is one of mine to watch because I am wanting to see if the Bruins can bounce back from a bad weekend. The Rebels do not have the same amount of talent as Blackford does, but if Blackford does not start off hot there could be an upset on Friday. Luke Brown should have his team ready to play.
Lawrence North (4A) vs Indianapolis Attucks (3A) – Jan 4, 10 am: Lawrence North has continued to dominate any team that has stepped in front of them. However, Attucks could be their biggest challenge since barley beating Jeffersonville in week 2. Sincere McMahon and the Tigers should be more than ready to compete with Tony Perkins and the Wildcats. Expect this game to be physical, back-and-fourth, and one that should only be decided by a few points.
