We start off with our #1 ranked in the class of 2020 for the state Colby Jones. The 6’5 SG had a huge week starting off with signing his National Letter of Intent to Xavier University capped off with a 24 point 10 rebound outburst in Mountain Brook’s 81-68 victory over Thompson. The do it all guard showed why he was such a highly sought after prospect throughout the travel ball season. His ability to rebound the ball from the guard position is something you cant simply teach. He has a motor on both ends of the floor that sets him apart from the rest. Expect more big games from this high major signee.
Keshawn Murphy the 6’8 WF from Ramsay had a huge game vs Sidney Lanier scoring 21 points adding 12 rebounds and 4 big-time blocked shots. He showed a willingness to defend something he has gotten criticized for in the past. He took the challenge of guarding much smaller and quicker defenders on the perimeter and competing hard on the inside. After a successful spring and summer, we wanted to see how the experience would translate to the school season and so far so good as the Rams beat the Poets 78-61.
CJ Burns also had a good game vs. the Poets pouring in 21 points and adding 8 assists. His ability to push the ball in transition and put pressure on the defense made it tough on the Poets throughout the night. He lived in the paint and either finishing at the rim or finding shooters for open jump shots. He is very vocal out on the floor communicating with his teammates and doing what an effective point guard should do which is making sure everyone is on the same page.
Joshua Williams Joshua Williams 6'2" | SG Helena | 2024 State AL led the Poets along with Juan Brown pouring in 14 points each. The poets struggled to score in the 1st half with the Rams playing a junk defense that looked like zone but went man after the first pass making it hard for Williams to get into the paint and cause havoc on the defense. He was able to find some scoring lanes in the 2nd half as he scored 11 of his 14 in the 2nd half. Brown a junior playing in his 1st varsity contest was able to thrive in transition getting to the basket and finishing at the rim.
In a hard-fought low scoring game, Spain Park was able to outlast Homewood by a score of 54-51. Bo Barber the 5’11 hard-nosed point guard had a very good game with 17 points. He controlled the pace of the game and did a great job of picking his spots and deciding when to score and get others involved. He picked up help from Pate Owen who added 12 points and 8 rebounds. The game was back and forth throughout the game, but Spain Park was able to hold on in the end.
Spain Park was led by Cameron Crawford who had a rather quiet night with 13 points, but he was able to score in crucial moments of the game. Though he didn’t have the best shooting night he was able to help his team win by coming up with timely baskets and defensive plays. His length on the wing was a problem for Homewood as they did not have the size on the perimeter to keep him from getting to his spots. Look for him to have much better scoring nights as the season speeds up.
