JPII dominated this game from start to finish, but it is worth nothing that North Dallas Adventist Academy’s star big man Lee Dort did not play in this matchup. Had he been on the court, this likely would have been a much closer game because Dort is a difference-maker.
The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the year with their 89-54 win at home over the Sentinel. Here are five standout prospects from the game:
Jaylon Tyson – 2021 6’5 Small Forward (Method Academy) John Paul II HS – Tyson put on an offensive clinic at the Prep Hoops Top 250 Expo a little over a month ago. He dropped 20 on NDAA Thursday night despite getting into early foul trouble and having to sit for much of the first half. The junior small forward had a few nice dunks in transition and also contributed a couple of corner threes. Tyson is more than just a scorer though. He is a two-way player who is constantly engaged at the defensive end. This kid is a really gifted all-around player.
Nate Dominick – 2020 6’5 Small Forward (Marcus Smart YGC36 (Adidas)) John Paul II HS – I love the way Dominick plays. He has a great jump shot and is a good shooter from behind the arc. His thick build allows him to play in the paint at both ends as well as contribute on the glass. That said, he will likely be a perimeter player at the next level. Dominick is fundamentally sound and has excellent basketball instincts. He has a super smooth offensive game and can score from all three levels.
Jalen Tot – 2020 6’0 Point Guard John Paul II HS – Tot is a twitchy athlete. The senior point guard is a shifty ball handler with a quick first step. He can take you to the hole with his burst but can also hurt you from deep with the three ball. He knocked down four three-pointers versus NDAA. Additionally, Tot has great vision in the open court which fits perfectly with JPII’s up-tempo style of play. The Cardinals’ lead guard finished the game with 16 points and three assists.
Cameron Corhen – 2022 6’7 Power Forward/Center John Paul II HS – This is one of those prospects that is still a little rough around the edges but has a lot of upside. Corhen got to play some extra minutes in the fourth quarter of this game and I really liked what I saw. He loves to hang around the rim and has a soft touch on his put back attempts. The sophomore big man also flashed some shot-blocking ability on defense.
Donovan Smith – 2020 Guard North Dallas Adventist Academy – Smith is an explosive athlete who thrives at playing in transition. He converted several acrobatic layups in this game by utilizing his ability to hang in the air. Smith is at his best when he is playing downhill and attacking the basket. It’s virtually impossible to stay in front of him once he reaches full speed. In addition to his athleticism, the 2020 prospect also showed that he can hit difficult shots by making a contested step back three.
