Ranney mowed through the conference on their way to a state title and a Tournament of Champions victory. Bryan Antoine left Ranney as the conference’s all-time leading scorer. Antoine and Scottie Lewis cemented their names in history as two of the best players that ever went through the Shore Conference. With both players moving on to top level collegiate program, the Shore is in search for their next superstars. Here are some of the top candidates to take over.
Alex Galvan (2020) | 6’6 PF | Manasquan
There is no waiting on Galvan to become a superstar. He is already there. As a junior, Galvan scored in double-figures in 30 of 33 games for Manasquan. He averaged 17.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. The big man was the leader of a Manasquan team that finished second to Ranney and won the Class A Central title. Galvan served as a top scorer and rim protector for Manasquan averaging 1.6 blocks per game. Heading into his senior season, Galvan has a chance to lead Manasquan to even bigger things this year.
Quinn Calabrese (2020) | 6’2 PG | Wall
One of the purest scorers in the Shore Conference. Calabrese averaged 18 points per game last season and had three outings of 30 or more points. Wall had a talented team last season and that will be the case once again as they will return four starters for the 2019-2020 season. Calabrese scored 21 points per game during Wall’s four game run to the Central Jersey Group III title. When Wall takes the floor for the first time in the upcoming season, they will return a confident and talented bunch and Calabrese will be the leader of the crew.
Jakari Spence Jr. (2020) | 5’10 PG | Toms River North
Spence had a breakout season during his second at Toms River North. He transferred from Manchester and was a burst of energy off the bench as a sophomore. As a junior, Spence averaged 18.5 points per game. He is a force on both ends of the floor. Spence uses his quickness on offense to get to the basket and on defense as a thief averaging 2.1 steals per game. Spence will lead a group of four returning players and a Toms River North team that has been extremely successful.
Charlie Gordinier (2020) | 6’4 SF | Red Bank Catholic
A prized football recruit, Gordinier is no pushover on the basketball court. After averaging 14.5 points per game as a junior, Gordinier is expected to join the 1,000-point club early in the upcoming season. It was a roller coaster season for both Gordinier and Red Bank Catholic but there is no doubt that the sharp shooter will be the team’s No. 1 option heading into the season. Gordinier hit 67 three’s a season ago and that number can be expected to rise.
