Yet we do not expect a shift in the balance of power within the CHL with Wyoming, Indian Hill, and Deer Park remaining in the driver’s seat. However, expect a rebuilding year for the other top-four finisher, Reading, with literally all of last season’s contributors residing in the 2019 class.
Moving over to players, let’s jump in and see who figure to be the most influential guys in 2019-20:
First Team
Evan Prater (2020) | 6-5 SF | Wyoming
Prater is the clear favorite to win CHL Player of the Year, as he’s the top offensive and defensive weapon in the league. He has played off of Findlay’s Joey Edmonds for three seasons but is suited to become the go-to scorer as a senior. Very hard to contain when he attacks the basket given his athleticism and plethora of counter moves. Conversely, he can defend literally any player in the conference.
Steven Gentry Jr. (2020) | 6-0 PG | Deer Park
Gentry is the lone survivor from Deer Park’s 2018 state championship team. His production could border on outrageous given his talent and need to produce. Gentry breaks down defenders with his quickness and handle — able to score or kick when attacking the basket. Quick defensive hands. Capable shooter.
Isaiah Walker (2021) | 6-4 SF | Wyoming
Wyoming figures to run their offense through Prater and Walker, a junior who picked up offers from Western Carolina and Youngstown State from this summer. Walker is a threat to shoot or drive from the wing. Plays with physicality and balance on short-range finishes, including layups and touch shots. Provides defensive versatility and rebounding.
Ani Elliot (2021) | 6-6 C | Deer Park
Elliot, a Springfield transfer, will immediately be one of the fiercest rebounders and shot-blockers in the league. His presence on the back-end of the defense is why we’d pick Deer Park to finish second to Wyoming in the league.
Elliot will also benefit from drop-down passes from Gentry, plays where he can finish above the rim.
Mickel Clay (2020) | 6-4 F | Finneytown
A Second-Teamer as a junior, Clay was one of three players who averaged a double-double, as he tallied 12.4 points and 10.3 rebounds on average.
Second Team
Deante Gray (2020) | 6-4 F | Wyoming
Gray is a very fundamentally sound and physical forward who should thrive in a more featured role this season. He’s has a physical profile suited to be one of the league’s top paint-scorers and rebounders. Flashes crafty post moves. Sets hard screens.
