Trenton Catholic finished 16-10 last season with a 7-1 record in both conference and division play. They were second in the Liberty Division. Good news for Trenton Catholic is that they have Watkins. In the offseason, Watkins narrowed his college selection down to four teams. He eventually decided to play for VCU over some quality programs including home state Seton Hall.
At 6’7, Watkins is a true Division I prospect. He is listed as a small forward but has the ball handling ability to run the point. He can also shoot and get to the rim like a guard. As a junior, he showed exceptional athletic ability on breakaway dunks and put backs. Down low, Watkins can play with his back to the basket and torment defenders.
“Jamir is a very talented, high-major athlete and multi-faceted wing,” Aaron Burt of Team Final told ZagsBlog.com. “He can facilitate offense or be the offense. He rebounds in traffic, blocks shots and is beginning to sacrifice his body on defense as well. Once he gets he has to compete at a high level on every possession it will be scary. We challenged him in July to be a better defender and more aggressive and he stepped up in practice, drills and most importantly games. Jamir is wide open is his recruiting. He doesn’t talk much so his process will be very quiet and direct.”
VCU is getting another strong prospect to add to their already strong recruiting class. Heading into the upcoming season, Trenton Catholic will look to improve. On the back of Watkins, they will try and get to the top of their division in hopes of being a dominant force in conference play. Watkins will have a chance to improve his game and not worry about the stress of a college decision. In New Jersey, Watkins will be a must watch player.
