The 2019 Bergen County Jamboree Final saw Bergen Catholic knock off the defending chamoionS, DOn BOsco Prep in a ashowcase of great talnet. In a year that saw the emergence of several stars including Bergen Catholic’s Matt Zona, the county appears to be in good hands with a number of very talented players looking to take their claims.
Matt Zona – Center – Bergen Catholic
While Bergen County possesses many prospects with high expectations and great potential, arguably the best player in the area is none other than Bergen Catholic’s Matt Zona. Zona, a returning Senior, used his size, strength and high basketball IQ to help lead his team to a Non-Public A state title. The 2019-2020 campaign should be even better for the Oradell, NJ native looking to put an exclamation point on an already great high school career. Listing Zona among the top five players in Bergen County was relatively easy as he might be the best!
Raejon Figures – Shooting Guard – Bergen Catholic
2019-2020 should be another dominating season for Bergen Catholic, and that has a lot to do with the emergence of guard Raejon Figures. Figures, a native of Montclaire, NJ, played a pivotal role for the Crusaders during their dominant season. Highlighted by his ability to run the team and impressive size at 6’2, 170 pounds, Figures will likely end his Senior season as not only one of Bergen County’s best but a statewide household name.
Myles Ruth – Point Guard – Don Bosco Prep
After transferring from Linden to Don Bosco Prep in 2018, Myles Ruth helped the Ironmen during their impressive 2018-2019 campaign. Using a quick first step and an ability to keep his dribble and find the open man seamlessly, Ruth kept the team steady when on the court. Ruth’s Senior year will hold high expectations after showing some immense flashes during his junior year — including a February matchup against Middletown where Ruth scored 17 of 23 points in a second-half explosion. Health will be critical for Ruth as he dealt with a broken hand mid-season. Should he stay healthy, he will be among Bergen County’s best.
Seth Sharif-Brown – Small Forward – Hackensack
Seth Sharif-Brown is one of the best offensive players in NJ. With a combination of strength, speed and size, Sharif-Brown helped lead the Hackensack Comets to a 17-11 record. In a junior season filled with highlights and impressive stats, Sharif-Brown won Big-North Player of the Week honors. A matchup with Dwight Morrow saw Sharif Brown post 23 points and 12 rebounds in a 65-63 win. In 2018-2019, Sharif-Brown scored over 500 points and grabbed 247 rebounds. Just imagine the numbers he is capable of posting in 2019-2020.
Nazir Williams – Shooting Guard – St. Joseph Regional
Making significant strides in virtually every year of high school, Nazir Williams is on track for another strong season at St. Joseph Regional. With a nice handle, Williams slashes to the basket effortlessly and shoots the ball well. A 26 point outing against Hudson Catholic was a highlight during the season for Williams and could become more of the norm for a talented guard that has drawn D-1 interest. As Williams continues to grow into his frame, he should be consistent headache for teams around the county.
