Seniors have already proven themselves to their coaches during their high school careers, but that does not mean they have nothing to gain. Here are the 2020 prospects who have the most to gain this season.
Jabri Abdur-Rahim, 6’5 SG/SF Blair Academy
It’s hard to imagine the top-ranked senior has much to gain, but Abdur-Rahim does. The Virginia commit has the opportunity to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game, if he puts together a strong senior season. The 6’5 wing is a solid all-around player as he can score from all three levels, defend on the perimeter and make plays in the half-court. Abdur-Rahim is a terrific player who should have a stellar college career at Virginia, but he needs a strong senior season to make the McDonald’s All-American Game.
DJ Alicea, 6’2 CG Dayton
Alicea is one of the top Group 1 players, but has not drawn a ton of interest from colleges. The 6’2 guard is a scoring machine who had 17 20-point games as a junior. He excels at getting to the free throw line and has a good looking shooting stroke. Alicea is one of New Jersey’s best kept secrets and a strong senior season should a rise in interest from colleges.
Gabriel Olaniyi, 6’3 SG Newark East Side
Olaniyi is not as highly regarded as Monmouth commit Mikah Johnson Jr., but he is an integral part of Newark East Side’s success this season. The 6’3 senior is adept at finishing around the basket and is able to get to his spot in the half-court. Olaniyi is one of the better on-ball defenders in New Jersey and should average over two steals a game as a senior. He has been the driving force for the Red Raiders in the Fall League, which could see a big rise in offers for Olaniyi.
Danny Oravbiere, 6’6 PF Payne Tech
Oravbiere may be an undersized power forward, but he is a skilled post player. The 6’6 power forward has a soft touch around the basket and knows how to slide his feet on the defensive end. His shooting form needs a little more polish, but Oravbiere is a hard-working big man that goes to work every game in the post. He is currently getting looks from Division II schools, but could get a couple Division I offers with a strong senior season.
Jakari Spence, 5’10 PG Toms River North
Spence may be only 5’10, but he is lightning quick with the ball in his hands. He has great handles, can finish around the basket and is adept at running the offense in the half-court. Spence is also a good perimeter shooter who makes defenses pay for giving him too much space. His lack of offers is a little surprising, but Spence is a talented play-maker capable of playing at the next level.
