Really grew on me during the first 5-on-5 game window. Jakobi manages to generate his 8′-15′ shot quickly. Knocking down one-dribble shots is easy for Jakobi while going briefly to his right or left. Entering his sophomore season, Gillespie certainly lives on wonderfully-evolved scoring intuition. Shot creation is his biggest strength.
“No matter what the trends are in the NBA — teams going big, going small, getting more efficient with analytics — the ability for a player to create his own shot, then convert tough shots, will always be a weapon, particularly when you get to the playoffs,” wrote Jamal Crawford.
Gillespie is a confident, young man. If he knew any of the other campers in advance, JG didn’t show it. He simply went to work and made an impression.
Measurements
Jakobi recorded a 13.30 time in the lane agility. That time is slightly underneath the day’s average. At 5-foot-10, Gillespie needs to be especially quick to be considered a college prospect. He is relative to his peers, but this must remain a priority during off-season training. Foot speed is very, very important to smaller guards.
The hand size is average. His leaping ability is average for a high school hooper. Though he reaches 9’10” now, expect him to be physically maturing into a slightly more explosive upperclassmen by 2021.
