GF Carter Janssen (Cedar Falls/2021)
A long, athletic 6-6 wing, Janssen showed off a little bit of everything in his bag at Super 48. The first possession we saw, he made a nice cut off the ball to get an open look at a 3. The next possession, he made a bullet pass from the top of the key to a cutting teammate for an easy layup. A few possessions later, he contested a shot, pulled down the defensive board and led the break, penetrating until the last second before dropping off a pass for another layup. He’s big and versatile on both ends of the floor, with the ability to handle the ball, pass it and shoot it. Look for him to have a nice junior year for a Tigers team that is going to be loaded again.
G Zach Huff (Don Bosco/2020)
The 6-2 combo guard is a lights out shooter, and that was on full display Sunday night. He has a quick release on his jumper, is always ready to shoot off the catch, and is a capable shooter off the dribble as well. He looks like he has gotten stronger, with big, broad shoulders, and that should help him finish around the rim at a higher rate. With Jack Kelley graduated from Don Bosco, Huff will have a chance to really showcase his lead guard skills this winter, but playing here on a team with a number of other quality ball handlers, he did most of his work off the ball, and was great.
PG Austin Hilmer (North Linn/2022)
The younger brother of one of the state’s all-time greats, Hilmer is coming off a really productive freshman season, and the Lynx will be his team this year. He showed off some nice pieces of his game on Sunday night, mainly by attacking the rim. He shows a good burst when coming around a screen on the pick-and-roll, exploding to the rim for finishes with either hand. He doesn’t shy away from contact, instead welcoming it. He needs to continue to learn how to play with better pace, changing speeds instead of going all-out all the time, but he’s got a great first step that he can use to blow by people. He’s a good shooter, and he even showed off some impressive court vision and passing ability that would’ve made big brother Jake proud, dropping a few pocket passes to big men for easy finishes.
PF Justin Recker (Monticello/2021)
One of the most intriguing players in the gym on Sunday night was the 6-6 big man from Monticello who posted big numbers as a sophomore. He’s long, athletic and highly active. He runs the floor well, finishes with either hand and has good touch around the rim. He showed a solid baseline jumper from about 12 feet, showing good form and rotation, and on the defensive end, he does a nice job contesting without leaving his feet. He needs to continue to add some bulk to his frame, but all the pieces are there for him to be a really good college player moving forward.
GF Jacob Townsend (Pleasant Valley/2021)
A well-built, 6-3 wing, Townsend handles the ball well and looks to push the ball after pulling down defensive rebounds. He has good hands and finishes at the rim with either one, and he showed a knack for attacking the defense in the halfcourt and finishing. He needs to continue developing his jumper, but he has good feet, good hands and a solid frame to build on.
PF Brady Klahn (Linn-Mar/2020)
Klahn is an undersized, 6-3 forward, but he doesn’t shy away from contact, competing on the glass on both ends of the floor. He showed a nice mid-range jumper, even using the glass on the elbow jumper, a la Tim Duncan. He uses either hand around the rim to finish, and is a smart, versatile defender who can switch onto smaller players without being lost.
