Grant Newell (Whitney Young – 2021)
The very long and lanky forward played with some poise and confidence on Sunday looking very good from a wing standpoint. Made it very apparent he has been working on mid-range jump shots as he did damage from the mid-post. Newell showed he was confident with his handles while on the perimeter whenever defenders tried to apply tougher pressure on him. Grant has some upside that most college coaches will want to tap into once he adds some bulk.
Johnathan Oden (Legal Prep – 2020)
Oden was one of the surprises for me. He is very long and had great recovery second jump while defending. Johnathan was the consistent in blocking and changing shots. He covered ground better than any of the bigger players at the showcase. Offensively he battles for position on the low post well. Solid hooks around the basket. On the outside he shoots a two hand shot, but makes it. Oden will be a really good small school prospect this year.
Everett Stubblefield (Willowbrook – 2020)
Quick and explosive guard who seemed to be around the ball all the time. Everett has great foot speed and ball skills. He’s able to split defenders while on fast breaks and never looked bothered. Most of his scoring was in transition. When the pace is slowed down he good off ball screens when attacking and if the defenders go under he can pull up and make shots from deep. A very exciting player that I hope to catch again before the season is over.
Finn Walsh (St. Laurence – 2020)
Walsh played with a lot of moxie on Sunday. A very exciting player who is crafty with the ball in his hands. Finn can slither and slash through guys when he gets in the lane. He’s more of a scoring guard who can facilitate when needed. Didn’t see him take many shots, but the ones he attempted looked good. Small school prospect at the next level.
Paul Zilinskas (Riverside Brookfield – 2020)
Paul opened up my eyes this weekend with his presence. He always had good size and build, but on Sunday he played with so much confidence and looked the part of a mature player. The senior was already a good shooter so it was no surprise to watch him make shot after shot. But I saw his awareness and confidence in putting the ball on the floor with nice drives and finishes in the lane that made me a believer that a low D1 or D2 school will get a solid 4 year ball player.
Jayson Kent (Oak Forest – 2020)
Mr. Kent is a prototypical shooter at the next level. He has good size and a good quick release that always looks like it’s going in. Jayson will need to add some strength as he at times took bumps that threw him off when driving to the rim. But his fearlessness to not just be a one trick pony shows he’s working on expanding his game. Kent on defense used his length well in the passing lane to disrupt passes and discourage shots. Jayson proved he’s a legit prospect!
