We took info from coaches, other media members, and debates between the Prep Hoops VA team to come up with some of the top 150 kids in the state. Remember, these rankings are based on where the kids play high school basketball, they are ranked on projected value at the COLLEGIATE level and they will continue to be updated before and during the high school season.
Here’s a look at some of the biggest stock risers in the 2020 rankings.
#43) William Lee | 5’10” PG | Blue Ridge (Previous Rank: 56)
The native of Queens, Lee has continued to become more and more comfortable at Blue Ridge since he transferred last season and looks like a division one player at this point. A microwave scoring guard, Lee can come in and get hot quickly and once he does it’s a wrap as he’s able to score it from all three levels and make contested shots. He’s a quick guard who can create space to negate his size and get his shot off, and he’s become a solid defender both on and off the basketball as well.
#47) Logan Washington | 6’6” PF | Life Christian (Previous Rank: 67)
Washington wasn’t the most heralded guy on LCA’s state championship team last year but they don’t win a state championship without him, and the work he did this summer shows he’s a bonafide full scholarship level player. While he’s a little short in the post for the next level he has great length and athleticism, and his timing as a shot blocker is impeccable as he’s one of the top rim protectors in the whole state. Offensively he’s limited to running the floor and catch-and-finishes but he’s a low maintenance guy who does the dirty work and impacts the game in a number of ways.
#52) Parker Huffman | 6’8” PF | Cave Spring (Previous Rank: 83)
If a big like Washington isn’t your cup of tea, maybe a guy like Huffman is. The Roanoke native spent his summer playing with VA Premier where he showed his rapid improvement over the past few years and had some big time games against some big time teams as well. At 6’8” he has the ability to stretch the floor and take bigs out, showed he can be a pick-and-pop or trail four man and will fit any system perfectly that is looking for an above 40% shooter from deep in a four man.
#62) James Wallace | 6’5” WF | Henrico (Previous Rank: 73)
Wallace will be heading to Henrico from Lee-Davis where he emerged as a sleeper in the Richmond area and will give Henrico something they haven’t had in a while but saw a lot of success with in the past which is a skilled and athletic wing with size. Wallace is a guy who’s all over the rim in transition, rebounds the ball well and is able to handle in transition and make plays for others with the ball in his hands. They’ll be able to plug and play him in different positions and he’ll create mismatches on both ends of the floor.
#69) Jahme Ested | 6’1” PG | Henrico (Previous Rank: 92)
One of Wallace’s new teammates, Ested was one of the most productive and feared guards in the Richmond area last season at Henrico and continued his stellar play this summer with TRGR. He’s an absolute dog on both ends of the floor as he sets the tone by picking up the length of the court, he rebounds well for his position and he comes at you every play that he has the ball in his hands. He’s improved quite a bit as a shooter and as a leader, and his quickness and toughness with the ball allows him to get in the lane at will where he can either finish in traffic or find his way to the line a lot throughout the game.
#80) Lance Johnson | 6’6” PF | Freedom South-Riding (Previous Rank: 113)
Johnson was a big reason that Freedom was able to upset their way into the VHSL Class 5 State Championship game, and he’s quickly becoming one of the most recruited big men for the top D3 schools in the state. At 6’6”, he’s a guy who plays much bigger in the paint on both ends of the floor as he’s able to guard one-on-one in the post against bigger guys, and he’s a good help side defender who alters and blocks shots without fouling. Offensively, he’s shown he can score on the block with his back to the basket, he’s shown touch on the midrange jumper and he’s a good clean up guy who will hit the glass or finish on lobs at the basket as well.
